Player connects to computer but will not charge

When I plug my mp3 player into the computer the screen says “Connected to PC” however it is not charging it.  Any ideas/suggestions?

Is the battery indicator showing a full bar?  Half bar?  Empty bar?

Do you have the latest firmware?

Go Sansa!

My wife received a 2 GB Clip for Christmas. It worked well until recently. When plugged into a USB port on my computer, the screen shows “connected” but the battery icon does not blink and the unit is not charged overnight, as it was previously.

We are having the exact same problem with our 2 GB Clip my daughter got for Christmas.

Christmas is the key word here: these earlier units were shipped with firmware version 1.01.11.  If you haven’t done so, install the Sansa Firmware Updater.  This application pops up when your Clip is plugged in (actually, when any model Sansa is plugged in!), and will offer you the one-click opportunity to install the latest firmware.

If you prefer, manually installing the latest firmwareis strongly advised, as there have been quite a few improvements.  This second link includes the Updater link was well.

It’s been 8 days since I emailed, no response. My clip, bought for Christmas, when plugged in, shows “writing/connected”,

battery symbol flashes. After a couple of minutes, battery symbol becomes solid. A couple of minutes more, blue circle illuminates, unit disconnects, then reconnects, starting the cycle. This goes on for hours yet the clip doesn’t take a charge. Computer: Dell Dimension 8400, XP Pro SP2. I have yet to see a “device connected” window. Can’t get enough charge to navigate through the menu.

Is it detected inside My Computer? How does it appear? Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements. Check the version of Windows Media Player(WMP). If it is below 10.xx, that might be cause. To charge it temporarily, apply force-MSC. Force-MSC: Unplug device from pc, turn it off, put the power switch to Hold/Lock, press/hold the circle middle button while connecting it to the pc. Don’t let go until the computer recognizes it. Leave it to charge. Now, check WiMP version. To do this: Open WMP, look/click Help on the upper side, hit About Windows Media Player. If its 9.xx and below, upgrade it to 10.

Used the force:MSC method, got the battery charging and the computer recognized the clip. Took almost a full charge

before I found a USB mode listing (possibly this came along with a 01.01.18 update after I got the downloader and had

plugged the clip in many times?). Changed mode to MSC and updated to 01.01.29a.

Thanks for the help!

My Sansa Clip isn’t charging anymore as well.  I can’t update any firmware, because the battery is too low for me to do anything.  I can’t even change modes.  I’m stumped here.  I’ve plugged in my wife’s Sansa Clip into both of our laptops and it charges and works just fine.  When I plug in with mine it just blinks saying it’s connected, but neither computer recognizes that anything is connected and like I said, it’s not charging at all.

I am having the exact same problem as Jestaar. I connect my clip to the computer, but the battery is too low and it doesn’t start charging in time so the display comes on, wheel lights up, and stays on for just a few seconds before shutting off again. It’s off for a second, the comes back on and repeats the whole process over and over again.

This is ridiculous! Low battery is preventing me from charging!?!? I’m ready to huck it out the window and never buy a Sandisk clip again.

EDIT:: Yes, I have tried connecting in MSC mode, and I have tried several different computers (all of which worked just fine to charge it before).

Try holding the power switch in the ON position for at least 10 seconds, and release, then plug it in to the USB port.  This reset may solve your issue.

Did not help.

I had to purchase a 3rd-party AC charger to get my clip to charge. When you plug the clip into an AC charger, it doesn’t activate all the computer connection ■■■■ that was draining my battery too fast to begin charging on the USB connection.

SanDisk should REALLY be including AC adapters with the clip if this is going to continue to be a problem. I would have rather paid $5 extra at time of purchase and gotten an adapter included with my clip than have had to go through all of this ■■■■.

Saurin, could you tell me which AC adapter you bought? Looks like this may be in my future as well. The Clip will plug in and charge, albeit very slowly, but the battery is drained VERY soon after.

I had the same thing happen with my 2GB sansa clip (I love that thing!!)  call Sansa customer support (1-866-726-3475) and talk to someone in India who will take your information.  They asked me to send proof of purchase ( I emailed them my confirmation from Amazon) and they sent me a RMA for UPS so I can send it back and they are going to send me a new one.  this was just last week so I have not gotten my new one yet.  Yes, they will replace it.

good luck!

jtsharp, if your Clip self-discharges the battery when the unit is turned off, an AC adapter will make no difference. It’s gotta be replaced. This is a known issue with some specimens. (Loooong thread on the subject)

Just for the heck of it, try connecting in MSC mode by putting the player into hold and connecting while pressing the center button down–any improvement?

Thank you so much Sir, the answer for this dilema is to put the player on hold and press the center round buttom while connecting it to the PC USB port.

Here is the situation that some people don’t understand about the dilema…

If Windows refuses to recognize the device for what ever reason, the device battery will drain out so you can get into the device menu to change anything and the softwear updater wont recognize the device either when plug in.

In a nut shell, the battery is dead so you can’t operate the devise to change any internal settings and Windows just won’t recognize the device either.

There is something about windows that makes it completely ignore this device, I know because when I first got the device, it will connect and charge from my home computer just fine, but it would not connect or charge to my work computer.  At first I thought it was because of the security at the computers at work, but then it started to do the same at home until I read the quote above.

That fixed this issue by forcing windows to see the device and not it works perffectly at home and at work, so when it runs out of charge at work, I can just plug it in and charge it up again.

I think it might have to do with the MSC mode thing.  By default this device connects to the computer in the windows special way, but if dont have the latest windows media player or and service packs, then Windows XP will just not connect to the device.

Before it was really wierd they way this device connected to windows and the way I had to upload music into it, but now it connects like any regular flash drive and I can just move files from folder to folder.

I really appreciated the help I found here, this thing was driving me insane and I felt so powerless, but now I am back in control.

Regards,

SVNET

After the software was upgraded, now I see an option to select which USB mode I want, I chooce the MSC mode.

But now I also see one last menu option under settings that says “press and hold”, what is that ?

when I go into it it says Add song to Golist

Rate Song

I must admit, I have not taken the time to read the manual, I just uploaded songs and started to use the device.

I see there are a lot of goodies included in this device, I love this little thing, but I am lazy to read.

I wish that a guru here will have a session to show off tricks and show how to make use of everything that this thing offers,

because even when I read the manual, I just dont know the use of a lot of the options avaialble.

Please help!

Well,

Now I have the device connecting in the MSC mode, but…

When it shows up in Windows explorer and I open the Music Folder, it shows empty, like if there are no files in the device, but there are 250 songs in there…

What is up with this ?

If you loaded the 250 songs in MTP mode they are only visible on the computer when the Clip is connected in MTP mode so you can’t see them when connected in MSC mode.  When you load the next 250 songs in MSC mode, they will only be visible when connected in MSC.

If you’ve still got all the files on your computer (i.e. they’re backed up), you might want to try a “Format” from the Clip’s Settings menu while not connected to the computer.  This will remove all the music files no matter which mode they were transferred in.  Now copy them back to the Clip in MSC mode.  You should be good to go.

I myself use MTP mode since I download audiobooks (OverDrive, NetLibrary) which require transfer in MTP in order to get the DRM licenses over to the Clip.  But if you don’t use this, Rhapsody, or some other DRM protected content then MSC mode is the way to go.  Much easier to use and fewer problems!!

Here’s my experience with my Clip.  Mine has been operating flawlessly since I got it in January with daily use.  It’s the 2GB black one with the most recent version of firmware.  I’ve been using it with Windows XP SP2 with WMP11 in MSC mode.  Starting Monday, August 4, the player would connect but would no longer charge or be recognized by the PC to allow for music transfer.  I used the message boards here to see if others were experiencing the same.  I tried all the suggested work arounds but to no avail.

I ended up calling the Sandisk Tech Support #: 866-SANDISK.  I talked to a guy (less than a minute on hold).  He was competent; although it seemed he was reading from cue cards.  He took my information and ran me through the battery of tests: turn it on and plug it in (fail); try different USB ports (fail); turn the player off, put it on hold, hold the center button, and plug it into a USB port (fail).  Nothing worked, so he took my shipping info and got me started on the RMA process.  I’ve received a confirmation email, so now I’m waiting for the official RMA email with my shipping label.

It ■■■■■ that it broke and that I’ll be without a working player for a while, but it’s nice to see that Sandisk’s customer support process seems to be pretty efficient, at least from my experience.  My advice to those struggling with Clips is to test out the device (using the methods described on these boards), and if all else fails, call tech support.  Hopefully, your experience will be as smooth as mine.
