So I have a passport Ultra. I have had it for about 2 weeks and I have been downloading satellite imagery data onto it for school. Last night I was downloading data and importing files. Everything had been running fine, a bit slow due to the heavy multi tasking and large files, but running fine none the less. When I was done for the night I shut down my computer and disconnected the drive. This morning I turned on the computer and connected the drive. The drive started making this mechanical clicky beep noise (about every 45 seconds), the light flashes constantly and is no longer being fully recognized by my computer. It was making this noise before when the device was functioning normally, but it was only once in awhile when it was active, like downloading a file, it was so infrequent that I thought it was normal. But now it is far to often to be considered such.
I go under my computer and I dont see it there at all. It appears in the device manager, where I tried to update my usb drivers, but they are all current. I tried disabling my external hard drive unplugging it from the computer and then having it be re-installed but that didnt change anything. I looked under disk management and it is there as unknown disk 1, not initialized. I have the option to initialize or to disable. I opted to do nothing as I do not want to risk losing all of the data I have downloaded. I have also tried plugging the device into a few different computers and I am faced with the same issues mentioned above. As it is, I cannot save anything on to the external hard drive or access anything on it.
The computer I am using is a Dell laptop with windows 10 and the passport is about 2 weeks old
