Bootable Backup on a Mac?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro (osx 10.8) and just purchased a my passport 1tb external harddrive (wx61E6AFJ51). I’d like to have the following set-up if possible:

***Partitioned Drive (2 partitions): 500GB devoted to a bootable back-up for my mac hard drive. The other 500GB to be used for transferring files between windows and mac computers. I would also like to be able to plug in my wd external hard drive and manually update my  bootable back-up to match my current mac harddrive. I am not interested in time machine, having access to past images of my hard drive***

I guess my question is: Is the included WD software sophisticated enough to do this? I’ve used super duper! in the past and its been able to do exactly what I’ve described. I would just rather not pay the 30 dollars for it if WD’s software is capable of the task.

And yes, I’ve called tech support and the guy said that 2 partitions are not supported/he was not trained how to set up 2 partitions. This is easy, I can get this far. He also said that a bootable back-up is not supported/he was not trained how to do this. I know it’s possible with third party softwares. Is it possible with WD’s software?

Thanks

2 partitions are easy to setup on Mac

not the best setup for a backup drive considering that multiple partitions tend to get the drive corrupted

I don’t know if is just me but I find it rather odd to have multiple partitions in one drive

The software might not work well with 2 partitions but you can try it

i ended up using the free version of superduper!. Everything is working how I want it and its super easy to use. I will probably end up paying the 30 dollars for the registered version to get the “smart update” feature and show appreciation for their great product.

I quite like my WD external drive, I just wish their technical support/ software was as good. I am still curious if you can create a bootable back-up with their software for a mac
