Western Digital My Passport 1TB problem

Dear all,

I currently have a 1TB My Passport hard disk which ‘My Computer’ able to detect it, however, when i tried to access it through ‘My Computer’, it will either load really really slow.

After that, i can see all my folders in the external hard disk, but when i tried to access those folder, it will load really slow at 1st, after that , the whole thing hang and said ’ Not Responding’ .

I have tried copy or cut out the folder, the file copying/moving window will appear but it will not transfer the file, it will just keep on loading. That’s it.

I have tried check disk and check disk failed.

I have tried various recovery software, most of them failed since the hard disk restarted itself, it was like it unplug then plug in again. Which causes the scanning process to stopped.

After that, i purchased and tried R-studio and it scan well at 1st, after that, it said

Read disk WDMy Passport 07301012 at position <insert lots of numbers here, the number continues to grow> failed after 1 attempts. The specified network resource or device is no longer available (55) .

I had tried my another brand new WD MyPassport cable, still the same.

Tried it with my ultrabook also same. :(

I also had loaded into safemode and see how it behave, it still the same :(

Help please, how can I save my data?

Sounds like a bad drive to me, what recovery software did you use? Did you try with Recuva, TestDisk or PhotoRec? Those are free and somewhat good…

Tested Recuva. Same thing… not long after it starts scanning, the external hard disk restarted itself, it was like I unplug and re-plug in the USB…

That causes the scanning to interupt and cancelled. :(

Any solution…? :(

If it’s losing power then you could try to force it with a booster cable, those that look like the letter “Y” so it takes double power from your computer. If it’s a power problem then it’s the casing gone bad. You could take it apart if you don’t care about the warranty and connect it on your computer but it depends on the passport type. The smartware models are always encrypted and won’t show the data that way.

The warranty just ended a few months ago anyway :3

Yeah, i searched in my market for the Y-cable , unfortunately, not available.

Do you know where i can get step-by-step guide on how to take it apart?

Mine passport is exactly look like this.

I believe it is the smartware model.

WDBACX0010BSL-00

is it this?

Yep, and that’s one of the encrypted drives.

So now what shall I do?

Can you elaborate on “and that’s one of the encrypted drives.”?

I’m having driver problem with my 1TB Passport Essential SE and as soon as I was asked if it asked for a password and answered yes, I have not been replied to since on my thread.  Should we assume if we have an encrypted drive that they are non recoverable once the request for password fails to show up or driver fails?  If so what is the best data recovery company to send my drive to as it was a backup which will not work after my primary failed.

Respectfully, Donuts

I don’t think there’s much to do unless you can find a logic board replacement for the drive, and even if there’s no way to tell if it will work because of firmware variations. Try with a recovery program like Recuva, TestDisk or PhotoRec (All free) for any luck, but it won’t be easy.

 Yes.

Best in the world are OnTrack and Data Mechanix.
