I am currently using a 12TB MyBook Duo as storage for my movie server. I am looking at the option to upgrade my storage from 12TB to 18TB. Can I accomplish this by just swapping out the drives or do I need to purchase a new 18TB MyBook Duo?

You can daisy chain the old duo to the new duo. Plus the new Duo has Type-C for future connection type.
So I take it from your response that it is not as simple swapping out for higher capacity drives. That I still would need to purchase a new MyBook Duo.
