Yesterday I updated My Passport from 1.5.1 to 2.2.1 for Windows 7 (64bit). Everything appeared to go well and I even copied all my data again as instructed as my backup.
As I worked through the day all was working fine as I had the backup running on continuous and I could see it working.
Today I switched on my lap top and was asked to reformat “My Passport” then it was disconnected from my PC before I could do anything. Every time I reconnect it asked to be re-formatted and then is disconnected.
The described update seems to be WD SmartWare as per your description, and should not affect disk drive behavior. If your unit is requesting to be formatted, then it may have a communication issue related to the cable, or is starting to show signs of degradation.

Many thanks for your advice, I did as suggested but the computer was OK and when I managed to connect it to the external drive all I got were errors.
This morning I have plugged the external drive into another USB port and it appears to be working Ok. I have no idea why but it will live in this port now.
