terribly buggy

I recently bought a fuze, 2GB model. The thing is nice, but I’m having some very annoying problems with it.  First, tracks occasionally just skip or return to the beginning while playing, even when the player is locked.  Secondly, adjusting the volume can make a track skip, as can taking the device off hold.

Also, when I want to view an album, is there anyway to  ensure that the tracks remain in order, rather than the player reorganizing them alphabetically?

Thanks

What are you using to rip the CD to computer.

I ripped a few CD’s from a CD direct to my library via Windows Media player 11 - and when I synch them to my player - they are in the order that they were on my CD ( minus any tracks I chose not to upload ).

That sounds like a hardware problem with the buttons. You could try a reset or reflashing the firmware. If it doesn’t go away I would return it.

You can keep the track order by using the track# tag

That  is interesting. When I go to albums on my fuze, it simply sorts the tracks alphabetically. The movements are properly tagged with track number, but apparently this data is ignored when displaying songs.  To me, this was terribly shortsighted on the part of the Sansa programmers.  I suppose it doesn’t matter for pop music or whatever, where the album format is largely unimportant, but getting the movements out of order in a classical piece is a terrible annoyance, especially when the large(unchangeable) font makes it impossible to see the track names on the small screen.

But by far the most annoying problem is the control issues.

Oh yes, I do use the track number tag.  The problem is that the album view ignores it.  If I display all songs, then they are sorted properly by track number but this is not a realistic solution to me because it is difficult to locate the desired album scrolling through the list of all the songs(many have a title unrelated to their artist, or piece)

On my fuze the album view is correctly sorted according to the track number. Maybe there is something wrong with your tags? The fuze does not support id3 v2.4. Also some programs seem to create buggy tags. id3 v2.3 for example is not allowed to use UTF-8. Try using a different program for editing tags, maybe this will help.

Use of other info like track number has been discussed, and even been eluded to as being worked on in a future Firmwire. What I have done with my 1 classical album (Not a huge fan but I am transposing some Vivaldi for guitar so I have it) was change the tags so that the track names were “Part 1” and so on so that the numbers are what it uses to sort.

As for you buttons, and skipping, What format are the songs in?  How were they added to your computer? How were they added to your fuze? Do the same tracks play fine on your Computer?

Good idea re: renaming tracks, but I would have to find a way to automate the process because I would be looking to change several dozen thousand files.

The tracks are WMA, ripped into windows media player.  I havn’t tried it with any other format. Yes they do play fine on my computer.  Its really an odd problem which only seems to happen when the backlight is off.  If I leave the backlight on, I can lock/unlock, change volume without skipping, but this is an undesireable solution because of the increased battery usage.

I know how the first part feels and I havent found a way to do it, I am going thru over 100,000 songs and messin with the tags, Adding different art, capatilizing bad album titles, etc. So if i find something Ill let you know.

The second problem now sounds slightly more common. Why do you lock the player?  If that is something that sets it off and can be avoidied that would be good (Obviously). Also something you could try, it might help, check your headphones. Unplug them, then re plug them, use a bit of fource as the jack is tight, you should feel it seat 3 times (Click into place 3 times). Some people have said this helps with the skipping in the songs.

mp3tag has an option to rename files according to tags. And it has a second option to set the song title from the file name. With those two options it should be possible to do that.
