Wow! Was it Blondie that sang “More More More” ? I think we should let the kinks work out before getting greedy. I don’t want any heart attacks, much less chronic Pepto Bismol use at SanDisk. Give the guys a break!

What a great surprise to see Vorbis support! Now I can encode my music with aoTuv to q4(128kbps) and save some space without losing almost any quality compared to 192 or VBR V2 MP3s.

Compression can be 30-50% of the original file size so maybe 4-6 albums on the clip 2GB (that equals twice as much on your 4GB) combined with a quality $100-200 of headphones (given the reviews which reflect the superior SoC audio quality of the clip) and the audiophile crowd can be very happy campers.
I understood about high quality. Had no idea there was such high compression. I have a Rio Karma that I don’t use as much since getting the Clip. The Karma handles FLAC so I may give that a try.
thanks!
Sansafix, hurry up! You’re losing a customer over the starboard bow Flac! Flac! Flac!

Oh no, FLAC support isn’t in the Clip this time, I’d better go return it because there’s 40 people that use it who want it…
now now… you never have anyone deny you by saying, “who cares about you, you’re only one of a million” right?

make that 41 onboard who will seriously start printing out flyers and promoting sansa mp3s all over my neighborhood in honor of sansafix I would be ecstatic over Flac paired with my Grado’s! and my mini3 amp.
Thanks for adding ogg vorbis support, and podcast/audiobook support.
One disappointment is that they do not work together ogg file placed under AUDIOBOOK still appear in music, does not allow faster/slower playback, accidental left/right click will skip to the beginning or to the next track.
OGG in Audiobook folder is a bug and will be fixed. As workaound try changing the .ogg files Genre tag to “Audiobook”
Sansafix, I’ll give it a try.
As always, thanks for a quick response.

Don’t get too excited, I think hakujin meant that the compressed file can be 30-50% smaller than the uncompressed, not 30-50% the size of the original. I’ve ripped about 3000 CDs to FLAC using maximum compression setting and the compressed file is usually around 65% the size of the original. Varies quite a bit depending on content, but somewhere around 65% on average. This translates to roughly 3 albums per GB, which corresponds to hakujin’s “4-6 albums on the clip 2GB” statement.

Uncompressed files are the originals (i.e. Compact Disc digital audio). 65% the size of the original = 30-50% compression. Toomato-Toe-mah-toe?

What point do exaggerated statements such as this serve?
i think thats more of sarcasm really…
but seeing that its ogg vorbis, its a lot better than not having it (i totally support this idea)… having FLAC would really be cool as well, like one of the guys here said, there isn’t any licensing fee to pay which have nothing to lose and we get another feature in the sansa clip, but what I am concerned is that with FLAC being compress, it will need to be decoded and this will drain the battery faster than it already does.

I’m new at this, so please bear with me. How do you change a genre tag?

Awww! Can’t The Kinks get greedy before working out?

I agree, that was my point. I understood you meaning, but your original post did say “30-50% of the original file size”, which would be 50-70% compression. I got the impression from kozmoBoxman’s reply that he took your meaning as 50-70% compression. I wasn’t trying to nitpick just to be annoying, I just wanted to make sure kozmoBoxman had the correct expectation if he did give FLAC a shot.
I’ve checked 20 FLAC albums(two are EP so I considered them as one) on my HDD. The total size is 5,90 GBs. Average size is 302 MB so they were reduced, on average, to 42% which fits nicely into what hakujin seemed to say at first. I’ve read on the hydrogenaudio forums how classical music CDs compress especially well, I can confirm this too, and also with very atmospheric music,e.g. some Pink Floyd or Max Richter.
Skinjob, are you sure you set the FLAC compression to maximum?
EDIT: if it helps, here’s the album list(ignore the Early Music playlist name, the albums were there by chance):

So guys…
I’d kinda like to install the new FW, mainly for the improved shuffle performance and also so I could compress some classical music- but someone has mentioned that the battery meter now drops prematurely. I don’t want to be fooled by the meter and end up charging my bnattery prematurely,…so has anyone else experienced the battery meter problem with the new FW?

Yes (I use -8). Like I said, it varies a lot depending on the content. I have some albums that compress close to 50%, but after ripping about 3000 CDs, average is around 65% compression. This is pretty typical of most people’s experience.
I think we’ve kind of hijacked this thread, so that’s probaly enough on FLAC.
P.S. If anybody wants more info on FLAC and ripping, http://www.hydrogenaudio.org is a great resource.
My battery is currently at 85%, after 2 1/2 hrs of use. I don’t know if that’s normal, but I’m still keeping track…
