RioX: Have you by any chance installed an installation disc for the Clip (Like the one that Best Buy includes with the Clips they sell)?
Those darn discs seem to cause alot of problems. If you installed such a discon your computer, I’d say that’s causing the problem (And from the sound of it- the icon appearing in your tray, etc. it sounds like that’s the case)
Yes, I did. Brilliant deduction! I would never have thought that was the problem. Strangely enough, I was able to get into MSC mode once or twice, but now I can’t. Is it possible to uninstall this (Best Buys) software completely, or will it litter my hard drive with little bits and pieces forever?

That, I don’t know. Maybe someone else on here does.
Those darn Best Buy discs have caused more trouble for Sansa. Some people have even given the Clip bad reviews because of all the trouble those discs cause…not realizing that it was the disc that was causing their problem. (I’d practically guarantee that is what your problem is- it’s like when you call tech-support for computers, and the first thing they ask you is if you are running an anti-virus program, and if so , the first thing they tell you is to shut it off and try again)
If Sandisk is smart, they had better do something about best Buy- I’m sure this is costing them ALOT of un-necessary returned items; tech-support and bad reviews…and it’s not even SanDisks fault…but Best Buys. (In my ePinions review of the Clip, I even warn potential Clip buyers of the Best Buy disc…it’s nothing but trouble, designed to trick people into using a proprietary subscription music service and allowing nothing else- what a travesty!)
If no one here can help you, RioX, try over on the Clip forum at anythingbutipod.com. Wish I could be of more help…but thankfully, this is only a problem I’ve heard about and never had the misfortune of falling into myself, so I’m really not sure about what’s involved in correcting it- but I guess it couldn’t hurt to try an uninstall.
I’m glad I use Linux, so I can’t install that software even if I wanted to! But if you *paid* for the music, why does it have to have DRM, anyway? It caused nothing but trouble for Sony when they released copy-protected CDs, & people complained about software being installed on their computer that invaded their privacy. Sony had to refund customers who bought those CDs, & removed the DRM from future releases. Even amazon.com is selling unprotected mp3s. It just goes to show what a headache DRM can be… I hope Sandisk gives Best Buy the what-for because of this! They have no right to trick people into installing that software. Shame on you, Best Buy!
I connected to a different computer that had never seen a Clip before. I thought I was in MTP, was recognized as a portable device, checked root directory and had Music, Audible, Clip01.01.20a[1], Record. Disconnected, went into USB mode, found it was in Autodetect. Finally got into MSC. After I connected in MSC mode, was recognized as a removable drive. Checked root directory and in addition to the files I had in MTP, I also had the following: MTABLE System file 657 KB, RES_INFO System file 27 KB, SYS_CONFIG System file 1KB, and version.sdk, SDK file, 1KB. I thought the upgrade would run on the Clip if I connected to a new computer without the Best Buy software, but that didn’t work either–still running 01.01.18A. Is it a problem that I have the upgrade on both the MTP and the MSC sides? Should I remove the upgrade from both and try again? What about the system files and SDK file? I get strong warnings when I even _think_ about removing them. Thanks for all the suggestions. This has been fascinating for me, at least. If I stumble on a solution, I will let you know.

What is “Clip01.01.20a[1]”? It should be called m300a.bin. I don’t think you unpacked the .zip file correctly.
After unzipping the .bin file, connect your Clip(in MSC mode) to the 'puter and open up “Computer” (or “my computer”), then drag and drop the .bin file to the logo that represents the Clip in computer/my computer. After the transfer is complete, disconnect the Clip and it will say “updating firmware”.
I think your trouble was that in the previous try, you were veiwing the level below the root directory in the Clip (if you could swee “audiobooks”, “music”, etc.)- the was I specify above, you will be able to drop the FW into the root directory, as opposed to the subfolders.
It’s actually the Rhapsody service, but the disc has been causing problems with the Clip for those that install it. Best Buy is selling the disc with the Clip, so people are basically tricked into installing it with the belief that they have to, to make the Clip work. The software leads you through signing up for Rhapsody. Not necessarily a bad thing(if you’re willing to pay for it), but again, the software causes problems with the Clip. If you really want to use Rhapsody, it’s probably best to sign up online & download the software directly from their website. But I wouldn’t know if there’s any difference in the software on the disc vs the website…
Is Best Buy offering subscription music? If so, I don’t have a problem with the DRM. It basically enforces the “rental” agreement.
Trouble is, that the software effectively prevents one from using the Clip in the simple drag & drop mode, and forces people to use Rhapsody exclusively. And it does so by installing this propriety software on your computer, under the guise that the disc is an “installation disc” for the Clip. I’d say that 95% of the connectivity problems that people come to this forum to rectify, are caused by them having installed that disc.

I wasn’t referring to the software problem; I was responding to the post before mine, which stated “But if you *paid* for the music, why does it have to have DRM, anyway?”
So to keep on topic … yeah, the decision to include the software was a bad one on the part of Sandisk. But that’s what happens when you make business-level agreements without doing the necessary footwork at the technical level.

You were right. I double-clicked the icon for 01.01.20 and got the .bin file, then dragged it in and the upgrade proceeded. (Of course I had to remove the 01.01.20 icons from the Clip, in both MTP and MSC. Thanks everyone!
