I did something wrong because I downloaded the firmware and now all my music is gone from my clip…
Does it appear to be gone when you look at the Clip itself, or when you look at its contents via Windows Media Player or some other music manager?
Because if you loaded your music via MTP, but then switched your Clip to MSC in order to load the firmware, then your music will not be visible in WMP until you switch your Clip back to MTP (and how do you like that alphabet soup?).
Otherwise … did you do a format before you loaded the firmware?

I bought the european version with FM radio - downloaded the new firmware 01.01.20E and lost my Radio! I then looked at the rest of the thread and saw that you need to delete the e from the firmware file m300e.bin and try again - and you get the radio back - then you need to set the radio settings to world and the volume setting to normal…
Very good - BUT - Sansa - to save worry and angst for your european customers with FM radio these instructions should be on the first page of the thread not buried on page 6 by whoever kindly first offered them!
BTW I am assuming that this method is not a cheap way for european customers who bought the non-fm radio version to get the radio?
And lastly a suggestion for the next updates if possible.
RDS support for the FM radio?
The * idea for the golist (mentioned by quite a few) is a great idea - but also - could the golist be available as a playlist file on synchronisation with the pc - so you can save your golists?
Apart from all that the CLIP is a brilliant product - exactly what you need for a mp3 player - I am reccommending this product highly to all friends and family.
Okay, I’m having a weird problem that I didn’t have with the last firmware update. I plug my Clip into my computer, the directory shows up and everything, but I cannot extract or drag & drop the .bin file into it - all I get is the ‘circle with a line through it’ icon. I’ve tried connecting it when it’s on, and connecting it when it’s off. I’ve even done the 15-second reset thing with the power button and renamed the .bin file to m300.
I thought I learned about upgrading after nursing my fragile, orphaned Rio Forge through numerous breakdowns until it finally expired. However, I’m definitely a newbie to Sansa matters. I’m in Windows XP. I unzipped the 01.01.20 file in IZArc. That program expanded it to a Stuffit file. My Stuffit version was expired. I uninstalled Stuffit and tried to unzip 01.01.20 again in IZArc. Now the file can’t be opened. Nevertheless, I pressed on. I put my Clip into MSC mode. Connected and got the icon in system tray for safe disconnect. However, got message stating Drive E was not connected (maybe I should have taken the clip out of Hold?). I dragged the file icon into the level of the Clip that had the other file icons (Music, etc). Disconnected Clip safely. Upgrade did not occur. It’s still in 01.01.18A. It seems to have gone back to MTP mode. To summarize:
Should I purchase Stuffit? I don’t understand why I need 2 archiving systems.
Is there a problem with my USB port or do I just need to take the clip out of Hold?
Easiest thing to do would be to download and install Winzip, which will properly unpack the .bin file contained within the .zip archive. I would recommend unpacking the .bin file onto one of your PC’s disks. Then drag-and-drop it from there to the root directory of your Clip while in MSC mode. (I’ve seen weird things happen when you try to unpack the .bin file directly to the root directory of the Clip.)
If you don’t like having two archiving systems on your PC, feel free to uninstall Winzip after you’re done using it.

You’ve got to give us more information if you want help. Where is the file now? How did you try to copy/move it to the Clip? What error message, if any, did you get?

You have downloaded Clip01.01.20a.zip, right?
This you can unzip (with IZArc, WinZip or whatever) giving you m300a.bin. This is not supposed to be expanded/unzipped further. It might be recognized as a IZArc or Stuffit archive file type, but don’t let that throw you.
Drag the .bin file to the root directory of your Sansa Clip in MSC mode (‘Hold’ and center button).
Disconnect the Sansa Clip and the firmware update will now begin.
Good point SajmonDK - the .BIN file extension is also used for (among many others) compressed MacBinary archives and Stuffit! will try to “extract” them - with an error message of course since the m300a.bin is a firmware file, not an archive file.
riox: IZArc can also extract MacBinary files, so you may not even NEED Stuffit any more - uninstall Stuffit and then go into IZArc and set the file association preferences so it handles .BINs.
What would be really nice is a firmware patcher - there’s obviously a lot of redundancy or “whitespace” in the firmware binary or it would not compress so much. I’m guessing something short of 3MB is actually used, in the 5MB+ file.
A differential binary patch such as this would save download bandwidth over the ZIP file. But it would come with it’s own set of issues relating to possibility of corrupted firmware, and of course, people hacking the firmware…
That is actually what I did before I posted. I ignored the Stuffit stuff and just added the 01.01.20 bin file to the other files on the Clip (all displayed as manila folder icons). I disconnected the Clip “safely” but the upgrade did not actually run on the player. Thanks for your patience, and thanks for keeping me from downloading Winzip. I will get back to this later. BTW, I love the Clip, just would like a few of the new features on the upgrade.

Was the Clip in MSC mode at the time, and did you copy the bin file to the root directory (the directory displaying the subdirectories like Music, etc.)?

I can’t say for sure, but maybe you should simly pull the connection and not use the ‘safely remove’ …? At least that is the way described in the first post of this thread.
Yes, and yes. Here’s the weird part: When I try to connect in MSC mode now, XP gives me a Sansa Clip icon in the system tray. XP asks what I would like to do, and I go into Windows Explorer. The Clip icon disappears from the system tray. When I look in the Root Directory, the .bin file is in there with all the other files (Music, etc)! It is a 5 MB file that I extracted from the .zip. The “remove hardware safely” icon does not show up in the system tray anymore. I cannot get back into MSC mode. My Clip is still running 01.01.18A. I guess that’s what I get for trying to improve on a great thing. The opposite of good is a little bit better. At least the music still plays
It sounds like it’s connecting in MTP mode. Are you sure you’re doing the MSC magical sequence of physical slides-and-holds correctly?
How is the Clip displayed in My Computer … as a “Portable Media Player” or a “Removable Disk”? (At the top of the My Computer window, select View -> Details.)
