Replace External Drive

I have an old WD external drive that has gone bad. I would like to install a different WD drive that I have. The external drive is identified as MDL:WD800B05-RNN; SUB 2050-001000-010. The drive is enclosed in a case with no obvious way to open the case. Can anyone tell me how to open this case? Thanks

Hi there,

I have not tried this, however lets see if another user can share some information or tips on this matter.

Since there’s not been a reply from the forum, would it be possible to forward this question to WD to see if they can tell me how to open the case?

Try searching on Youtube there is probably one there.

This is not supported by WD. This is the reason why it’s up to another board member to provide unsupported assistance, as noted by @ArMak

Finally found out how to open the case. There is a thin blue plastic strip along the edge that is part of a large plastic cover that attaches to the drive covering. That plastic strip can be pried off. When off there are two screws in the edge of the drive covering. Those screws are removed to reveal the drive casing. Two screws under the WD label can be removed to release the drive from the casing.
