Question about pausing audio without losing place

I just bought a Sansa Express, it’s my first mp3 player.  I wanted to use it to playback recorded lectures in mp3 format.  The lectures are quite long, several hours, and when I try to pause them to do something else, when I come back the Sansa has turned itself off and has forgotten my place, and fast forwarding is very slow and time-consuming to find my place.

Is there anyway to get around this, either to save my place, or at least a faster way to fast forward?

Thanks!

The Express is supposed to start back at the same spot where you left it when you turned it off.

But, it doesn’t always work that way.

To work around the problem, consider editing your recordings into smaller files. You can use a program such as Audacity to convert the files to mp3 format. You can make them into smaller files so they are easier to manage and to “start over” when the Express forgets it settings.

Most of the time this works for me:

If you want to pause for a longish time, press and hold the power button until the screen shows that it is shutting down (about 4 seconds, until the little dog or whatever comes out to eat the Sandisk logo).

When you want to resume, just tap the power switch quickly one time.

Almost always this works for me.
