Please help - WD Drive unlock problem (not the usual and a bit complicated)

Brand new WD 1TB myPassport - My wd drive unlock appears to be conflicting when connected to USB 3 giving me the error message: “you must run the WD Drive unlock application from the WD drive unlock CD associated with the drive you want to unlock”.

The drive shows in disk management as unallocated and not initialized. I ran a test and connected my old passport to USB 3.0 and it offers me the password which I enter - but the point is before I enter my password the drive also shows in disk management as unallocated and not initialized - leading me to assume this is a problem with my wd drive unlock.

Here are the facts:

I have an old 300gb passport which works on USB 2 and USB 3 ports.

My new 1tb passport works on USB 2.

I can connect both to the USB 2 ports and both work fine.

Occasionally (after changing drive letters) I got the new one to unlock via USB 3 but then after one successful unlock it goes back to the “you must run the WD Drive unlock application from the WD drive unlock CD associated with the drive you want to unlock” error message. So I am just not getting past the unlocking stage when connected to USB 3.

I think it may be super relevant that the new passport doesn’t recognize its own WD Drive unlock.exe program - why would it suggest I use the drive unlock application from the CD associated with the drive - that’s exactly what I am doing (obviously).

It’s as though there is some sort of conflict.

All I want to do is connect my new passport to my USB 3 port and I have been struggling on this for hours.

Please help.

Hello  asm244,

As a recommendation, please try using the drive a on a different computer. If you are able to unlock the drive, please remove the security on the unit and connect that back to the other PC to see if you still gets the conflict.

Tried it on a different computer (though it’s exactly the same model and make) and got exactly the same.

I have discovered that it may be a driver problem - see I am using asmedia usb3 and the driver I am recommended from ASUS website isn’t the most up to date. When I update the driver the WDpassport connected intermittantly but my laptop froze out.

I think ASUS have scewed up. My model is k53e (sold to me as x53e by comet).

Situation now is I am using the recoomended driver and whe I plug the passport in the unlock comes up but instead of being asked my password I get the error message : please use the unlock associated with the drive you wish to unlock etc.

Thanks for your help anyway - I don’t think there is a solution I have spent 2 days on this and it’s a case of ASUS mobo conflict with the driver. Will use it as a usb 2 until I upgrade my laptop.

I hope you read this last part becuase I need advice and have made great ground on this (after 3 days…lol).

Got it working!!! Kind of…

So turns out the problem was the unlock.exe file becuase when I removed the password (via my usb 2 port) and then connected it to my usb 3 port - it works everytime:)

I think the virtual CD was somehow blocking the mounting of the drive. So I am now wondering - should I try and set the password while it is plugged into usb 3.

Alternatively, is there a way I can remove the unlock.exe (secret partition) from the WDpassport and copy it to my desktop. This way there will be no virtual CD interference (though I realise I won’t be able to open it on other computers without the unlock.exe file but I could just keep a copy of it on my drive)?

So any ideas what caused this? It is working fine now albeit without a password. As I say, when I set a password it works in my usb 2 ports but in my usb 3 ports the drive doesn’t initialise and instead of getting the password prompt I get the error message about using the correct unlock prog associated with the drive I am wanting to open etc.

Would wiping the entire disk (of the hidden partition) be okay or would this stop it working?

Thanks for your help.

Andy.
