Odd behaviour from passport

Hi there,

I’ve been trying to troubleshoot my friends passport, it’s being very odd. I’ll plug it in, it will whir and flash its light, hold the light for a couple seconds, then the light will start flashing again. The computer will make a “new device inserted” sound. It will not show up under My Computer, nor the Device Management screen. However, just a second after I pull it out of the USB slot, the hard drive will show up under My Computer! It will then quickly dissapear with a “device removed” sound.

BUT! At one point, it actually showed up under My Computer while plugged in and STAYED there, allowing me to access it and move data off it, although at an incredibly, amazingly slow speed. Unfortunately, it disconnected itself before I could move every thing. It has shown up a couple other times, but will disconnect itself before I can move any data or access the drive.

The computer I’m testing it on runs XP. I also tested it on a machine with Vista. Again, the hard drive wouldn’t show up anywhere, but just after I pull it out, it will say it needs to be reformatted (which I can’t do even if I wanted, since it doesn’t show up under My Computer to let me format it).

Any help would be very appreciated, as my friend was silly and didn’t back her data up anywhere else. Thanks!

If your passport is recognized in the disk management window, you can try to use recuva to recover your files.

Do you have another USB cable to try?

Well, no wonder. if you’re always just jerkin’ the data cable out, you going to corrupt the file system. if recuva doesn’t work, check disk management, then reformat the drive. you’ve lost the data. always safely remove the drive before pulling the data cable.
