I’ve just brought a new 4GB Clip + and have yet to put any music on it. I just need some advice on what is considered a good bitrate for the music to be played on the Clip +. All the music I have ripped to my computer from CD has been in the Mp3 format at 320 kbs, and all the music I have downloaded has been also in Mp3 at 192 kbs and above. I just wondered if I should transfer all my music across to the Clip + in the current state and maybe take up more space on it, or convert to maybe a lower bitrate first or even a different format and then transfer over to save space. I’m just a little worried as i’ve read that converting any lossy format again to another one or the same at a different bitrate makes the quality worse. I know the Clip has a reputation for great sound quality, but I do wonder if putting 320 kbs Mp3’s on it is maybe overkill.
I know you’re probably going to say I should let my ears me the only judge and experiment a little with trying songs at different bitrates and then listen for myself, but I would appreciate some more expert advice also.
Personally I use 256kbps for mp3’s, but since getting my 8GB Clip+ and a 16Gb card, I’ve now got a dedicated FLAC machine. FLAC takes up a lot more space than even 320kbps mp3’s, so no, I wouldn’t call it overkill. If you’re satisfied with the amount of music you can fit on the player and any external card you have, or want to get in the future, you’re good.

As far as what bitrate you want to put on your clip+ is your preference. You will be the one using it so choose what so choose based on what sounds best to you. I myself am concerned about battery life since I am out pretty much from morning to night so I converted all my music from FLAC to 246vbr mp3s. I probably could have gone lower to 192vbr, but I didn’t feel it would make that big of a difference.

How’s your battery life? My old V2 8GB Clip was only good for about 8.5 hours with FLAC.

How’s your battery life? My old V2 8GB Clip was only good for about 8.5 hours with FLAC.
That seems about right. Its this thread that convinced me to convert my FLAC songs to mp3 since I was concern about battery life.
