As far as I know, I haven’t set a password on my drive. And I couldn’t really say that the smartware is on the drive or not at the moment. I’ll check it out…
I had the same problem. The icon of my Book didn´t show up. I opened the disk utility in my Mac and startet the Check modus. After 3 minutes searching, it showed me that my book has to be repaired in some ways. so i startet the repair modus and voila, there is my disk on the screen. Before that, i couldn´t see the icon and the WD Smartsoftware said that my Book has 100% capacity, what of course is total nonsense cause last time there was only 33% left. Now everything is ok, my files are back and safe for the moment. Try it, maybe you have some repair Problems too. Sorry for this bad english, its late and english is not my native language. I will certainly buy a second backup. The backup of a backup. This feeling of a possible loss of so much data is extremly bad.
Well, the SmartWare software is definitely on my MacBook. But the fact that the software starts when I connect the drive suggests that “somewhere” the drive is still recognized by my mac, or not?
All right… I connected my HDD on my Windows PC: Same problem! The WD Smartware shows up, but when I try to do any action, it says:
"No writable WD SmartWare partition found on your My Book Essential Drive.
There is no writabele WD SmartWare partition available on this WD drive. This can occur if you are attempting to write to a WD drive formatted for a different operating system, or if the drive is locked.
Please make sure that this WD drive is formatted for the operating system you are currently working on, and that the drive is unlocked."
I know that I formatted the drive to work with my Mac, but I can’t reformat it to work with Windows, because the drive doesn’t show up. And i’m 90% sure, that the drive is unlocked… If not, I would not know how to do or undo it.
