My Book Takes Forever To Mount/Unmount

I have an old My Book 2 TB drive (USB 3.0) that takes about 30 seconds to mount (when USB cable is plugged in) and about 60 seconds to unmount (when safely remove device option is used) under Windows 10. Once mounted, the drive works fine, and there are no indications that the drive is failing. Connecting other external drives like my 1 TB Passport, drives in aftermarket enclosures and USB flash drives all mount/dismount in seconds like they should. This has been going on for some time now and has probably been this way ever since I acquired the drive. It seems like it takes longer to mount/unmount when more of the drive is being used. Is this a common problem that can be fixed or is this just normal behavior?

Hi @kflash08 ,

Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:

No sense in doing so as the drive’s warranty ended many years ago.

Have you tried a different USB cable? Or a different port? Is the drive pretty full? Actually, that last question might have been stupid as I have 3 My Books that are all pretty full and haven’t had this problem so… Anyway, good luck!

Same results with different USB ports and with different computers. Drive is almost 3/4 full.

and a different USB cable as well?

Same result with a different cable.
