When I tried to copy into the Samsa player a folder containing several songs in the FLAC format, I received a warning that this format is not recognized by the device and “do you want to copy the files anyway?”. I answered “no”.
Later, I did a search and found an answer saying that the FLAC format is recognized. I am confused. Two questions:
Can the Samsa Clip play files in the FLAC format?
If negative, can you suggest a free program to convert the files to MP3?

It’s only supported in the latest firmware. Check your firmware version under system info. and see if matches the version specified in the sticky threads at the top of this forum. They will also instruct you on updating if need be.
I marked this answer as “answered” but later on I discovered that it was not wholly correct (at least for my configuration). (My Sansa Clip does not play files in the FLAC format).
After I updated the firmware to the latest version available (using the automatic updater, which works wonderfully), I tried to Sync. a playlist composed of 12 files in the FLAC format from WMP to my SansaClip, to no avail. I received an “error”.
I then used a converter to convert the files to MP3 format, created a new playlist and in a few moments I transfered it to the Sansa player. Works fine now.
This is for the knowledge of the users, Of course I’d like to read any comment.

WMP cannot play FLAC files (at least version 10, which is what I have), so I doubt it can be used to sync them. You should use another program if you want FLAC & sync support. I don’t use sync’ing (I don’t have many FLACs either) to know what’s best, but I’ve been hearing that MediaMonkey is a pretty good alternative.
I’ve synced FLACs using Winamp too.

As far as I know, Windows Media Player 11, which I have , isn’t compatible with FLAC or Ogg Vorbis without adding additional plug-ins of some sort…which is one of the reasons I use both WMP and MediaMonkey, along with good old Drag&Drop :wink:

Totally. I’ve been using it for yeeeeeaaars and years, gone through multiple versions (started in 2.x, went through 3.x, skipped 4.x - I’m not sure they even released that version - and now I’m at 5.x), and I love it.
I use almost no plugins (except a Lyrics plugin that displays the Lyrics from the currently playing song from a free, editable database) and it’s still great. I’ve seen other people using it with a few plugins, which ones I don’t know, but I assume there are plenty out there to accomodate your needs.
On the downside, on my PC it’s a little bit slow sometimes. But nothing that’s too bothersome. And when transferring songs in MTP mode, it seems to replace “/” (and maybe a few other symbols) with “_”. But you can edit the song on the player through Winamp and it’s fine. Another thing - Winamp supports video playback. I’d like it better if they scrapped that function, because it’s total ■■■■. I don’t know if you want it or not, I don’t need it so I don’t care 
I’d recommend it to anyone. Some people might not like it and I’d understand, but it does everything I want a media player to do, which is why I like it (e.g. not taking up space in the taskbar as an open program but as a symbol in the right box - I forget what it’s called).
Oh and it can rip CDs to FLAC too, I’ve done that a few times, and now I’m getting rid of all the other ripping programs I have
Anyone thinking about getting a new media player should just try out Winamp, it’s free and if you don’t like it, you can still get another player

Will it rip to MP3? MediaMonkey only rips or converts to MP3 for the first 30 days unless you buy the “gold” version, or have to knowledge to add in the proper encoder or some such thing. And the WMP11 MP3 encoder is not very good… in an Applish way, it doesn’t work as well as WMA :stuck_out_tongue: So I have a lot of variable bit rate WMA’s, which actually turned out quite well, but they’re not universally compatible, either.
Just tried it - no, it does not (“You must purchase Winamp Pro… blah blah” ). But I do think you can add an extra MP3 encoder that you can use. I thought I had done this a while back, but I guess not.

I’m hesitant to try adding something like that, 'cause my computer guru lives about 5 hours drive away and I don’t want to crash this old beast. So I got lots of WMA VBR’s…lol
Haha, well… that ■■■■■ Well I’ll be using FLAC from now on. But I don’t buy too many CDs anymore anyway. But I will never settle for WMA, no matter what

FLAC’s all well and good for archiving, but do you use it on your Clip? Pretty big files…of course, my clip is only 2gb…
Well, not all the files I have on my clip are FLAC. My Clip is 8 GB so I don’t necessarily have a space problem, although it’s 75% full I think. Some files are FLAC, but most of them aren’t. If you need more space MP3 is probably more convenient, yeah

For easy, reliable, solid MP3 conversion… one word: “foobar2000” (no, not a joke, it’s a real app – dumb name, great app, freeware, no-nag, it’s really great – google for it)
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve wanted to check it out for some time now but haven’t gotten to it. Didn’t someone even say it was made by the same company as Winamp (Nullsoft)?
foobar2000 is also my preferred audio player. Great program, very lean, yet feature-packed. It was indeed made by a former Nullsoft contractor.
And if you like foobar for audio, use should also try Media Player Classic for video.
