Mac user having all kinds of problems

My operating system is the OS X.  I have hooked it up and it charges fine, however I cannot get anything to work correctly.  I read some other posts that says set the setting to  MSC but it just goes into usb mode I select MSC but it still stays the same, what am I doing wrong???

Could you be a bit more specific about what happens, or doesn’t happen, when you connect the Fuze to your Mac?

What version of OS X are you running?

I’ve written a description of how to get MP3 players to work with recent OS X versions at http://guyscharf.wordpress.com/mp3-on-macintosh/. You might see if anything on that page helps you.

The version is 10.5.6.  When I connect it, it does charge however I saw where I need to change the settings to MSC, however I can’t get it to stay in that position, it just goes back to usb cable setting.  Again, I’m new at this so I’m a beginner.  I have a feeling I should have gotten and IPOD and just be done with it.  This is way over my head I feel.

I’m glad I’m not the only newbie having these kindof challenges upon startup.  I’m usually pretty quick to pick up new things on the computer - but my device is a little quirky to get it up and running with my computer too ( Desktop PC computer )

BTW - Did your Fuze have a charge when you unpacked it from the packaging.  Mine was 3/4 full charge out of the box - which I wasn’t expecting - and after an hour and a half - I still haven’t gotten a full charge yet using one of the USB’s on the back of my computer ( Dell Desktop Inspirion 4600 )

Once you make the change to MSC and plug it in, there is no difference in the way it mounts to your mac. It should look the sameI use an IMac at school, When I plug in it docks the SD card as “No Name” and the internal memory as Sansa Fuze. Does yours do that? GuyScharfis probably the best source for Mac stuff, follow the stuff on that site he linked that is (For lack of a better term) The Mac-Fuze Bible.

Give your charge some time, It takes mine 2 hours to get over the hump that is the last 25% but it also takes 4 hours to play my fuze down to 75%. It will be OK

New technology can be confusing to anyone, so don’t worry about the newness of it.  You’ll find people with problems in any technical forum.

Frequently, the source of the problem is some simple misunderstanding.   We’ll have to ferret out whether that is happening here.  We need just to go through the process step by step, describing as precisely as possible when your experience differs from what I described on my other web page.

Did you give your Fuze a chance to charge?  The ones I have seen come with about a 3/4 full charge but maybe yours didn’t.  If so, just leave it plugged in for a couple hours.

You say “I saw where I need to change the settings to MSC, however I can’t get it to stay in that position, it just goes back to usb cable setting.”  That statement confuses me.  You change the Fuze to use MSC by turning power on (you can’t do this while charging), use the scroll wheel to find the System settings and select System by pressing the select button (the middle button), scroll to and select USB, and then scroll to and select MSC (the default value as shipped from the factor is Auto-Detect).  That setting should be “sticky” (i.e., you only have to set it once).  As a double check, after pressing the Select button to select MSC, press the menu button (the one to the top and right of the scroll wheel) to go back to the main menu, then back through System, and USB.  You should still see that MSC is selected; nothing should have changed.

After you have MSC selected, connect the Fuze to a USB port on your Mac (not on a hub or splitter) using the cable supplied with the Fuze.  Does the Fuze now appear on your desktop?

If it does, then see the web page I linked to in my first post for how to download music.

If something of the above didn’t work, tell us what you did and what happened.

I have another unfortunately dumb question.  I’m still having connection issues with my Mac.  The Fuze came with a mini installation CD:  My question is can this cd be slid into the side slot for normal sized CDs?  I didn’t want to just do it in case it jammed it up because it’s a mini.  Thanks.

Jim

You don’t need or want to use that mini-CD.  That’s for using the Rhapsody music service.

What’s happening now with your attempt to connect?

I gotta be honest, the problem lies with me and my limited knowledge of how to set things on the Fuze.  For example even the instruction where it says to set to MSC mode isn’t working for me:  I go to settings, scroll down to where it says USB Mode and then select MSC:  at that point I click the middle and it goes back to USB mode, I click everything I can find on it and yet it still goes back to USB setting:  I have no clue.

One of the problems with new interfaces is figuring out how they are supposed to work!  It’s so much easier to show someone how to use the Fuze than to describe it in words, but that’s the media we have here.

In any event, your Fuze is operating as expected.  When you select USB on the Settings menu, you see a list of Auto-Detect, MTP, and MSC.  Think of this as somewhat like a pop-up menu.  The little arrow shows which mode is selected.  If you then press the Select button, you are selecting the mode, the menu then “disappears” and the parent menu (System) reappears.

When you select USB, you should see that MSC is your currently selected USB mode.
