about 5 years ago i bought a 160g mybook, it sat in the box in my closet for years and i never used it. recently i found a need for it and hooked it up and it worked fine. but now im getting a problem where when i turn it on it spins for 1 sec then stops. spin stop… and so on. but sometimes it starts working again and everything is there. but it may take hours for it to actually get going. as of right now its on and my computer recogonises it, and im pretty sure as long as i leave it on it wont be a problem. but if i turn it off again then i gotta deal with this spin stop cycle again.
i have never dropped this hard drive, and it sits on the bottom of my computer desk behind a door to avoid being knocked over or damaged.
Is it a powered or USB powered drive? Have you tyried different USB ports? If it’s powered try turning the adapeter 180 deg in plug. It sounds like it might be a power issue. What OS? since it’s 5 years old did you check support and see if there is an updated driveer.
I’ve also noticed that sometime other devices plugged into other USB ports can conflicts. Try removing non-essential usb devices and see if that fixes things.
It is powered. and im running windows XP, there are no drivers on the site for it, but now that you mention it. i did flip the plug 180 at the outlet right before it finally started working.
Post back in a bit and let us know if turning the plug solved the problem. We just stumbled on that last week and Bill passed it on. It sounds dumb and shouldn’t make a difference but apparently it does. The simple fix is a polarized plug that only goes in one way.
