I don"t want this software

yes I’m yelling - I DON"T WANT  WD SMARTWARE!!! I want this to act as an external drive, what I purchased IDON"T want  it messing with my other drives. Now it won’t shut off - can’t get it out of my taskbar. Don’t bother sending me any information because in about 2 minutes this thing is going to in the driveway in about 10000000 pieces and I’ll be buying a different brand of external drive. I want to be able to plug this thing in and have it do nothing but be an extrea drive - instead I have to wade thru ■■■■ popping up every time I power it up wanting me to install Smartware - I don’t have time for this and as for 'joining the community - it’s easy" -  really?  and posting after you join?

Posting Messages

How do I post a message?

Go to the board you want to post on, and click the New Message link near the top of the message list.

On the Post Message page, you will see a Subject area and a Body area.

  1. In the first field, the Subject field, type a title for your message.
This is the only part of the message that shows up on the message listing page, so try to make it something that will be clear and concise. Use keywords about your topic.
  2. In the second field, the Body field, type your message. Put details about your topic here. If you are posting on a technical topic, it is helpful to include all pertinent information regarding your inquiry in the body.
  3. You can use the controls to change the fonts, colors, and other aspects of your message. You can add smiley faces using the smiley menu. And you can format the text at the character or paragraph level.
  4. If you want, you can click Check Spelling to look for misspelled words, or you can click Preview Post to see what your post will look like on the boards.
  5. When you are happy with your message, click the Submit Post button.
Your message will be added to board and everyone else on the board will be able to read it. - yeah - that’s easy

…  Uhm, you DO KNOW that you can turn the SMARTWARE VCD Off, right?   Or did you not take the time to read any of the documentation on the subject?

Read KB article 3835 for starters…

Depending on the external drive whether the smartware is on a chip or is actually on the drive.

if the SMARTWARE is on the drive itself,

Possibly eradicate and wipe the drive of all info including WD software and reformat it,

depending on which OS you have,

then when plugged in it should read as a normal usb drive without hassle software.

I myself hate all the popup software and have wiped out wd drives with such software leaving a peaceful quiet drive when plugged in.

" recently got a Western Digital MyBook external hard drive to enable Time Machine. It has it’s software installed on a “virtual CD” called “WD SmartWare” which shows up on the desktop any time the drive is plugged in. Since I will use this virtual drive only very rarely, how can I hide it from the desktop, while allowing other CDs to show up?"

STEP 1: Firmware Update: Release 2.003 (3/4/10)

Before running the Virtual CD Manager, you must first update the firmware on your hard drive.

Disconnect all other external drives from the computer except for the My Book or My Passport drive you want to update.

Ensure that the My Book or My Passport drive is connected to a USB port on your computer.

Download the Firmware Updater for Windows.

Unzip the file and double click to open the Firmware Updater.

Click Continue to update the firmware.

Click Accept the End User’s License Agreement (EULA). The updater will scan the drive which may take a few minutes.

Verify the attached drive’s serial number located on the back of the drive.

Click Update Firmware.

Once the updater is finished, click Exit.

Turn off the drive - For My Passport, disconnect the USB cable. For My Book disconnect both USB and power cables.

Wait 10 seconds. Reconnect the USB/power cables.

STEP 2: Download and run the VCD Manager

Download VCD Manager for Windows.(WDSmartWareVirtualCDManagerforWindows-v1.0.7.4.zip) to your desktop.

Unzip the utility (Extract the file using an extraction utility.)

Double click WDSmartWareVirtualCDManagerforWindows-v1.0.7.4.exe.

Click Continue to disable the VCD.

Once the utility has found your drive, click Configure Drive and then click Exit.

Turn off the drive - For My Passport, disconnect the USB cable. For My Book disconnect both USB and power cables.

Wait 10 seconds. Reconnect the USB/power cables that have been disconnected in the previous step.

Verify that the VCD no longer appears.

yes true,

that it only disables it and hides it,

only true way is to eradicate the drive and reformat it, then you would have to remove the board in the external case and use it like a normal ext, hdd drive.

Simplist solution is just to return them if he can and just get one without smartware,

   would be the easiest solution.

pointing out eradicating the drive with the proper software will remove the smartware, with proper programs,

i’ve done this to multiple smartware wd drives bought or traded for.

some works fine after removing some get bricked, ones that got bricked got the firmware reinstalled.

Beautiful!   Instructions for bricking your drive and voiding its warranty get Kudoed as being especially helpful to other users.

HU thats funny didn’t i say that, and i quote myself

“some works fine after removing some get bricked, ones that got bricked got the firmware reinstalled.”

once again you troll peoples post without thinking things through or without reading,

As stated with the proper software you can without bricking it ,and if you do brick it you just reinstall the firmware,

you make it seem like its a nuke going off and tree wont grow anymore.

As i also stated as well as many others who agree if you don’t want the smartware you should take it back if possible and get one without smartware on the drive so yea i get kudos for suggesting something ,

you get nothing for being a troll.

ive wiped 3 of my external books reformatted with smartware and never bricked them, common sense would tell you eradicating the drive voids the warrenty,we all now that.

no more replies to RooferMan due to lack of common sense.
