Help! Hopelessly confused! Can I get out of using Time Machine?

Without giving it much thought, I chose to use the WD drive to back up using Apple Time Machine. If I want to recover data from my WD drive (say, a few pictures) without using Time Machine, how do I do that? If I plug my drive into a PC, how do I recover data? At least when I plug it back into my Mac, I don’t see my files on the drive; I only see applications… I am so confused…

Am I bound to Macs (or, gasp, my Mac only) and Time Machines now if I want data recovery? And do I have to restore whole applications through Time Machine? Is my data hidden somewhere in the applications? I am in way over my head with this hard drive and Time Machine. I wanted a simple drive with lots of space to backup and carry around all my baby photos and videos… Can I even use this drive with more than one computer if I’ve already set it to backup using my Time Machine? I bought a drive with lots of memory so that I can back up all of our comptuers at home.

I would really love it if someone can walk me through all this… I tried reading through the forum messages, but the questions and answers sound so complicated to me… Should I start all over, forget Time Machine, and manually select files I want to backup? And… how do I even do that??

AHHHHH!! Is there customer service personnel I can speak with?
