As I read the rockbox forums I’d be surprised if anyone on this forum has tried Rockbox yet on a Fuze. It doesn’t play music without crashing yet, the USB doesn’t work yet, and you have to compile the bootloader yourself.
however, I’ve used rockbox on my iRiver iHP 120 for years, and I like it. The think about rockbox is, it gives you every feature you would ever want, but it’s a bit clumsy to use. You do a lot of drilling down menus to find things and set things up. Screens are a bit primative, but you can totally customize wallpapers, display layout, font size, etc. You can set up conditional crossfades between tracks, configure the “randomness” of shuffle, etc. If you like to tweek things you will love rockbox. Just don’t expect it on the Fuze too soon.

Personally I don’t see the logic in buying something as expensive as the Fuze to then put some kind of “experimental” operating system on.
To me, it would a lot more sense (for anyone that wants to try Rockbox) to just go to the Rockbox website and look around at what devices they already have working versions for. Then just go buy one of those devices.
There are plenty of those devices available all over the internet dirt cheap! I bought a refurbished e280 and a c250 to “experiment” with Rockbox on.
Even though I do have Rockbox on those, I just don’t see all that much need or use for it. The Fuze pretty much does everything I need/want an MP3 player to do as it is already. For me, Rockbox is just something to tinker around with.
Now that I think about it, when the first version of Rockbox for the Fuze comes out, I don’t think it will be worth downloading yet. I’d rather wait for others to report on Rockbox for the Fuze before I do download Rockbox. I’ve been watching youtube videos on Rockbox on the e250, and I was impressed about the features that the operating system has a lot of features to it. I do expect Rockbox to be quite sucessful on the Fuze, but time will tell…
While I do believe the Rockbox team will eventually get a fully operational version completed for the Fuze… I would go as far as saying it will be all that much of a success with Fuze owners. Remember, Rockbox only runs on the V1 models and I really doubt that there are very many of those on the market now anymore. In fact, I doubt if there were all that many of the V1’s ever made to start with.
And, as I mentioned in my other post, there are tons of all the other models/brands of MP3 players still floating around that can be gotten dirt cheap for people to experiment with Rockbox on.

The Rev.2 Fuzes started landing in customer’s hands during the Friday after Thanksgiving Sale this past year (2008). Particularly those sold from Costco for their $49 price for the 8GB model.
We started seeing the glut of new membership and posts citing problems with it the very next day here on the forum. This continued well through the entire Christmas season and well into the new year. Nobody here even knew about the different hardware revision yet as SanDisk, in their infinite wisdom decided it wasn’t an important enough of a change to let us know, so that we could advise people about the change during that long holiday weekend when their tech support people (who are supposed to handle this sort of thing) was understaffed because they were all at home enjoying a turkey dinner!
It wasn’t until after about a week or so that the fact that a 2nd hardware version of the player had indeed hit the market was actually confirmed by Sansafix here, and at the same time an un-expected firmware version was released (for both hardware revisions, adding even more confusion to the issue). Very few details were given out at that time regarding the differences, and absolutely nothing was said explaining the reasoning or need behind the change. Even to this day, SanDisk is extremely tight-lipped about the whole debacle.
I wouldn’t expect a Rockbox port to the Rev. 2 Fuzes any time soon. As you point out, they don’t even have it ready for the Rev. 1 players yet (which also include the e200 series v2’s). And they have been working on this for years since the v1 e200 players were successsfully ported.
The Rev. 2 Fuze models, I’m sure will require starting over again from scratch, just like they had to do with the differences between the v1 & v2 e200 series players. They’re just 2 totally different animals.

It was called for if you don’t know anything stay quiet. Keep it up ATZ thanks cause of you I have Rockbox. I have been around sansa products and I have a e250 rockbound and know my fuze is rockbound isn’t It that amazing
The Fuze V2, if I remember correctly, does not have much different hardware from the V1.
The only way to know for sure, is to disassemble it.
And if you want Rockbox ported to the V2, post the differences on the Rockbox forum, and we will see how long it takes to port it.
However, it all depends on community work, so all help is appreciated.

Now it’s true that he did edit this post, but only an hour after he wrote it, and far earlier (6 hours) than you replied to it, so was this your inflection? Please don’t put words in somone else’s mouth.
Narf did say that he has used Rockbox on another machine for some time, so while he doesn’t have it installed on his Fuze (and doesn’t think it’s safe yet to do so), he is familiar with the firmware and I assume knows how to read and navigate the Rockbox site to find out the latest on developments there. He even admited to partly (at least) basing his opinion on what he has read in the Rockbox forums. So I don’t agree with your opinion that he isn’t ‘knowledgeable’ about the situation (I won’t repeat what you actually said).
If he feels it’s not safe to install Rockbox on the Fuze yet, you should respect his opinion on that. Even the Rockbox folks don’t feel it’s safe and ready for primetime yet, or there would be an official ‘release’. There isn’t. If you want to be a cowboy or a daredevil and risk it, that’s certainly your right. But don’t criticize someone else for being cautious or advising others to do the same. The possibility exists that this can irreparably damage one’s player and not everyone has the $$ to replace it if it does or wants to risk it.

I’m not sure why you are so pissed at me. According to the ROCKBOX forum, their Fuze firmware isn’t operational yet. All the bugs I mentioned are from the ROCKBOX forum.

Well miltst it is nice to be able to speed up songs with pitch in rockbox
Rockbox has been pretty solid with my fuze. Other than the battery life, usb, and random crashes while playing games, I very much prefer it over the OF.

To me it seems like, Battery life, USB support, and Not Crashing, are things we want in a player not the other way around. I can not imagine anyone going out and saying I want a USB device that does not have USB support, has minimal battery life, and that crashes randomly while I use it. This is what I dont understand. Even if you dont like the factory firmware, why put a third party firmware on the player that negates the basic selling points of the player? Why do this after Saratoga (A rockbox developer) came on here and said not to? Why not wait until the rockbox people have a stable port for the fuze then test it out? Fill me in… I want to know.
If you would look at it like this… Explain why you made the choice to rockbox your player now… as opposed to waiting.

I agree completely. I will most likely give Rockbox a try on my 2 GB Clip once it is officially ready, but given that I do not have the knowledge that the developers have, I’m not going to try something new like that on one of my primary players to begin with. My Fuze and 8GB Clip are my primary players, and will remain “pure” for the foreseeable future. I, too am curious about CB’s ending question.

As to the current usibility, here is a quote from the Twiki page:
Disclaimer : Rockbox is not in a usable state yet. Unless you know what you’re doing AND interested in getting the port forward by contributing to the project, please reconsider installing the bootloader again, and once more. Even though the bootloader installation is tested, there’s always a fair risk of rendering your device useless. Again: There’s no known recovery method which works on all AMS Sansas. We are not responsible for any damage your device takes during this procedure. Also, bootloader installation has been confirmed to permanently disable DRM support on the e200(to be investigated on other targets).
So, decide for yourself. Once Rockbox is ready it will be great. On the mature platforms it gives you every option you could think of and alot you couldn’t.
