Firmware on White Box Connect With No Wifi

Let me see if this low-tech consumer has it straight.  If I continue to use the Sansa Connect that I purchased in the white box (without a CD), and using OS 1.2.0.58335, I can use microSDHC cards.  Correct?  But the player is without the wireless capability that was built into the player.  Correct?

However, if I manage to locate and use the firmware updater [sic], it will roll back the firmware to an earlier version which will enable the player to receive internet radio, but it will not then allow me to use the microSDHC cards.  Correct?

Boy, oh, boy – am I ever confused!

HELLLLLLLLP!!!

Either firmware version will let you use microSDHC cards.  Rolling back the firmware will add the WiFi functions.

Follow this procedure to roll back the firmware:

Thanks for that, Promised Planet, and just to confirm that we’re on the same page – I was referring to the High Capacity microSD cards … if I manage to follow your instructions and successfully install the firmware, I will still be able to use those (say 8GB??) and I am *not* limited to just 2GB SD cards?  (Read many posts which seemed to say people were having problems reading anything higher than 2GB.)

I may have to holler for more help if I try to install the firmware. ;)  (Tried to update the firmware in my Sansa M250 last night and it sat there blinking at me and saying “Reconnect!”  I gave up after 5 tries.)

I appreciate your help and that you took the time to reply.  :smileyvery-happy:

Yes, microSDHC (high capacity).  I currently use a 16GB microSDHC card in my Connect.  In theory, a 32GB should work too, though I don’t know of anyone who’s tried it.

I just got the Sansa Connect as well from a “white box”.  I have the same ZAP & OS versions as the original poster had.  ZAP 1.2.0.58335r, OS 1.2.0.58335.  I downloaded the firmware updater from the Sansa Vuze page, and when sansa updater runs it says no updates are available for my Sansa “PMP”?

I am running Windows Vista.

Also why can’t I find any reference to my Sansa Connect 4GB on the Sansa website?  It doesn’t even list it on the retired items.  The retired items only shows my E2xx series and the Cxxxx series?

Thanks in advance for any insight.  I also used the link for the FAQ and the link is no longer valid.

Not sure what the “Sansa Vuze” page is.  If you’re saying that you’re trying to run the Sansa Firmware Updater on the Connect, that won’t work.  You need to run the Sansa Connect Recovery Tool.  First install this tool:

http://mp3support.sandisk.com/tools/DeviceRecoverySetup.exe

Then follow the instructions in this thread - note that on the 2nd page of the thread, there are instructions specific to Vista:

I don’t know why SanDisk removed any references to the Sansa Connect, although it may have to do with the fact that they ended their partnership with Zing (who is now owned by Dell).  Zing supplied the firmware for the Connect.

Thanks Promised Planet, I was trying to find the DeviceRecoverySetup program from one of the existing current mp3 player’s on Sandisk’s site and could not find it!  it apparently well hidden, or I’m that dumb.

Itis in the process of doing the “installing software” on the handheld.  Looks like everything was done successfully! I have the wifi icon now!  Thanks again!

Glad to hear it’s working.

Yeah, besides the fact that it’s a super-discontinued Sansa, SanDisk was recently reorganizing its website (or at least the Sansa part) and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Connect pages got lost in the shuffle.

Wow, that stinks.  I just also got a refurb’d Fuze.  this will be the 3rd sansa player i’ve gotten.

Yeah, I saw they’re selling refurbed Fuzes on Woot.  I thought about it, but I’m going to pass.  I bought a refurbed Sansa Clip from Woot a while back, and it arrived with a detached battery lead, which is a problem that was occuring in the manufacturing of some Sansa Clips.  Which probably means either my Clip wasn’t really refurbed, or the refurb wasn’t done well.

Then when I went to exchange it with Woot, they didn’t have any replacements, so I was out the cost of S&Hing the Clip back to Woot.  Pbbbt.

I just bought two of the Connects and performed the firmware rollback to enable the wifi functionality.  The option for Internet now appears in the menu.  When I tried accessing two different public wifi networks, the player acknowledges the network by name and shows full signal strength on the display, but will not allow me to perform any further functions.

Not sure what to do at this point.  Any suggestions?

Is it possible that those networks present a login page to computers that try to connect to them?  The Connect can’t handle that.

What do you see on the Connect when you try to select one of the networks?

Hmmm…

I recall connecting to one of the same networks a few weeks ago and it did bring up a login page to use their network.  That obviously is the issue.  Thanks for the info!

You’re welcome.  If you want to try out the WiFi and you don’t have your own WiFi network, the best thing to do is go to any area with a lot of private homes.  You’re bound to find at least one open network.   A lot of times you can find one right outside of a hotel, too.
