My husband dropped out external drive and now we cannot open it to get the content. We took it to our Staples store and the Tech there suggested to contact WD. Has this happened to anyone else?
Sadly when a drive gets dropped it’s usually beyond do it yourself recovery and requires a professional. It’s not cheap only you can decide on that.

Hi,
Joe is very likely correct in both these situations. However, if either of you wants to attempt alternate means of access, you can try one of the following-
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ (use the Linux boot option, default settings.)
OR
http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage
I am partial to the first of these. Both offer means to create a bootable CD or Flash drive containing a variety of utilities. There is a great deal of discussion on recovery issues here-

and here-

Please post back if you need assistance with these efforts.
