Drive "Cannot Be Modified" Message

I am getting a message when I try to add new files to my External Hard Drive

I am a Mac user, and I would really appreciate advice. Should I transfer all of the data on my EHD to my Macintosh HD, then restore the EHD? How would I do this to make sure I don’t lose any data?

Thanks for your help!

Which WD external drive you have?

Is it My Passport (2.5") or My Book (3.5")?

Which Mac OS you are running? 10.4 or 10.5 or 10.6

Which Mac computer you are using? PowerMac, iMac, Macbook…

I have a My Passport. I am running OS X Version 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro

I think all that I need to do is to transfer all of my data from my hard drive onto my Mac HD, but I just want to make sure that I don’t lose any data.

Thank you for your help!

If you did not use any back up software to save your file to the WD My Passport drive.

All you need to do is just do the copy and paste them to your Mac internal drive.

Create a folder on your Mac HD, name back up then copy and paste your files there.

After that you can manually open them up and make sure all files are working,

before you delete one on the WD My Passport drive.
