DOCKING the Sanza Fuze

As I underestand it, the Fuze is not compatible with iPod pin connections.

Does this mean I can’t use any of the many audio “docks” available in my local stores ?

( radio with a slot to connect youe iPod )

I’ve never seen a “Sanza Dock” at TARGET or BestBuy.

You can use SOME of them. If it has a standard plug that goes into your headphone jack you can use it. So any of the “Universal” Docks. BUT you CANNOT use the Ipod docks that require you plug the Ipod into the 30 pin connector because it will fry your Fuze. Alltec Lansing makes some docks for the Fuze but I dont know where they are available in retail stores. Also if you find a Dock for another Sansa product (View,E200 series, Connect, etc.) they will work for your fuze the only problem with them is that the fuze’s connector is not centered so you have to make sure it will fits.

I ordered the Altec Lansing IM413 for my fuze off of ebay. No shipping charges or tax.

A local store I have never seen them, compusa, tiger direct are direct retailers but they cost a little bit more than e-bay.

The im413 works really well, charges while I play my music, not alot of fuze controls but it gets the job done at the office.

I believe I have seen the Altec Lansing docking stations in Walmart. Maybe Target too, but I’m not 100% on that.

You CANNOT use just any Altec-Lansing dock with the fuze. The model you want is the iM413, made specifically for the Sansa models. It says right on the box “Made for Sansa”

I have never seen a dock compatable with the Fuze/Sansas at any store, but maybe I missed one.

I did however grab the iM413 for $30 on buy.com

Correct! I should have mentioned that.

And it WAS an iM413 “Made For Sansa” dock I saw at Walmart. Of course that doesn’t mean ALL Walmarts carry them.

But $30 at buy.com is a good price!

The Altec Lansing iM510 is a nice option too, it’s smaller (about the size of a pencil box), with a pop-out dock for the Sansa.  It’s described under “docking audio” on the Altec Lansing website.

The iM510 is handy for stowing in a briefcase or backpack.

Other speaker units can be used, provided that they have a 3.5mm stereo jack that you can connect with the headphone cable.  The disadvantage is that no power is supplied to the Sansa for charging.

There’s a really inexpensive option, use one of the Griffin power docks (at various vendors for under $20) with a USB AC adaptor, then plug in a basic set of PC amplified speakers.  I have one set up with a nice set of Altec Lansing computer speakers, with a big subwoofer.  It plays loud enough to make the dog hide under the desk.  He’s not into Iron Maiden, I guess.

Griffin dock: $15

Altec Lansing BXR1121: $29

Scaring the dog:  _ priceless _

(He likes jazz better.)

If anyone knows how to get hold of the im413 in the UK I’d be keen to hear.

We seem to have nothing available specific to the Sansa.

Alternatively, if anyone Sateside is planning a trip to the UK anytime soon and fancies carrying a bit of extra baggage, let me know

That I forgot someone mentioned that a while back. I dont know about the UK… Maybe Try other European Markets?

I’ve googled it to page 10 and it only seems available in the US or…the US!

The price ($) is good - if I’m prepared to pay nearly 150% more for shipping!

Oh well, as the Sansa (Fuze) gets more popular, maybe someone will take a punt and start stocking it. (Well, I can hope can’t I?)

It was available over there at one time but its not anymore… I dont know why… maybe itll make a comeback.

I also use a Griffin Power dock and other accessories that works well with the Fuze:

Griffin Power Dock for Sansa.
With it you could charge and sync your Fuze to your computer’s USB with the included cable.

  • Search eBay for “Griffin Power Dock for Sansa . (some sellers at eBay ship overseas).

The Griffin PowerDock also has a standard 3.5mm  ( 1/8" ) female audio port to connect to headphones, portable speakers, stereos etc.  If you want to connect it to your stereo just plug an adapter like the Gigaware Audio cable  42-414 to the PowerDock and that’s it. There are other 1/8" stereo (3.5mm) male mini to 2 RCA male audio Y cables that will do the same.

Belkin Chargin Kit for Sandisk Sansa - model F8M05. I use it plugged to the Griffin PowerDock to charge my Fuze through an AC outlet to the wall or to a car cigarette lighter port.

Search eBay for “Belkin Kit Sansa” to use AC power and car power instead of plugin your Fuze to the computer. The adapters plug easily to the Power dock…

Forgive my ignorance, but the only time I was ever in the UK was a stop-over on my way to Germany . . . Is the electrical power set-up over there based on 110v 60a? I know most parts of Europe are on a 220v grid. So getting one made for the States may not be a viable option for you, regardless of the cost.

At least you wouldn’t have to worry about the steering wheel being on the ‘wrong’ side. :smileyvery-happy:

Ah, you have an interesting point, but there is a simple solution.  For the UK, mains voltage is 220-240v 50Hz with the BS-1363 3-pin plug.  Looking at the iM413 rear panel, it requires 5v DC with a standard cocentric power jack.

Perhaps, the iM413 is only supplied with a 110v AC adaptor.  A substitute should be simple to find.

One last thought: the integrated FM radio may be an issue, as it covers the US standard FM band, with odd-step 200 KHz spacing, e.g. 100.1, 100.3…  Of course, the AUX input and dock are the primary needs.

I recently saw an interesting item on eBay. It is an iPod dock adapter cable. It has a mini stereo plug on one end for connection to anything with a mini headphone jack. The other side is an iPod female dock connector/adapter. Very useful for those who want to utilize iPod accessories (will need modification to a male connector). They were priced too high at $15US + shipping.

I’m going to attempt to make one from a Sansa original cable, since I have a mountain of them. Should be no problem getting sound output. Will take some digging to get detect, enable and charging worked out. Also the female end needs to be swapped with a male. Will be testing hookup on a Klipsch iGroove SXT.

gwk , you’re right!!

You piqued my curiosity, and I followed the cable down to the wee “wall wart” supply for the IM413.  Lo and behold, it’s a switching unit, capable of operation in either “world” of AC power.  All you need is a little adaptor plug.

The only drawback is that the power unit will be spaced away from the socket by at least 25mm.

I have emailed Altec Lancing who have said that they have no plans to market the im413 in the UK.

There is no denying it – The ipod has a goodly number of quality speaker docking units available for it.  And the Sansa doesn’t

Having read the “DIY Line Out Cable” thread and other related threads, there are advantages to using line out capability rather than headphone out.

Being able to utilise an ipod dock via the Fuze’s line-out would be a neat idea, so I am considering making my own ipod-to-Fuze connector block and need to run a quick question or two past those who are more familiar with the pin-outs.

As I see it, the connector would be wired at the Fuze (female) end thus:

27 – Right Audio Line Out

28 – Left Audio Line Out

7 & 22 – Jumpered

29 – Audio Ground

At the ipod (male) end, it would be wired thus:

5 - Right Audio Line In (Fuze 27)

6 – Left Audio Line In (Fuze 28)

2 – Audio Ground (Fuze 29)

The connector itself would be solid (ie, no loose wire connection) so the Fuze could/would stand in the ipod dock correctly.  Such a connector could also then utilise other ipod cables (eg to the aux in on a car stereo)

I appreciate that no charging or remote facilities would be available in the above, but have I got this basically right?

Finally, are the physical connectors themselves the same, or does the Sansa connector differ from the ipod?

Thanks for any help, advice or comment.
