I recently got a Fuze, since I’ve run out of space on my beloved 8 GB Clip.
I love the Fuze so far but I’m a bit disappointed that I can’t manage my playlists with Winamp like I did it before with the Clip.
Winamp crashes every time I try it - I did a bit of research here on the forums (and abi-forums) and now I know that it’s a known issue because WMP competes against Winamp and that WMP wins this competition
I also read some posts which advised to just change the usb-mode but that’s not an option for me. The MTP-mode is kind of my holy grail, because I want to pull out the cable of my device at almost any time without having the fear of damaging it or losing files. So I’d rather not switching the usb-mode, even if that means that I can’t use Winamp anymore.
Now I’m searching for a program that allows me to browse through/search through my previously in MTP-mode (drag&drop)added music and let me create playlists.
What I do not want is syncing my fuze. I just want to create playlists with songs that are _already_ on the player. WMP makes that really complicated and even when the device and the WMP-media library contain exactly the same music it happens that during ‘syncing’ a playlist some songs get duplicated on the player. (I know that with ‘right click’ and ‘create playlist’ I am able to create playlists in
mtp-mode but that option isn’t really comfortable and I’d like to sort the songs in my my playlist alphabetically. Plus I’d like to make playlists with many different artists/songs from different genres and it’s a pain to search all of them manually ‘by hand’.)
So basically I search for a program that acts like Winamp, and which let me search through the songs that are already on my Fuze and let me create playlists with those songs.
Is that possible with Media Monkey? I’ve tried it but I couldn’t really search through the songs on my player, let alone create playlists with the songs. Maybe I made a mistake. If so, I’d give it another try.
Maybe someone is able to help me with my little problem Im open for suggestions!

USB was designed to be hot-pluggable for MSC. You can yank the Fuze any time you’re not writing to it. My USB hard drives are in formatted to NTFS and I yank those as well. It’s only a problem if you enable write caching in Device Manager, which is by default turned off for all removable devices.
Making playlist is a basic function of any media manager, and Media Monkey should do what you want. But your choice would be more plentiful if you make the MSC switch, as many mgrs work in MSC only.

There’s absolutely no reason why you can’t use Winamp with your Fuze just like you did with your Clip. They’ve got the same processor and are virutally identical, except for their physical size screen type and their controls.
You’re right . . . WMP feels threatend when Winamp is on the scene, but you just have to clip its wings. In your Windows settings, make Winamp your default player and shut off the auto start-up on WMP whenever a CD or audio file is detected. I use both depending on what I’m doing and have no conflict issues once I toyed with settings and files associations with both programs.
It’s actually more dangerous to just yank the plug in MTP mode than it is in MSC. MTP writes data in the background so you never know when it’s reading, writing or taking a nap. With MSC mode you can tell. As Tom mentioned, MSC is the all-encompassing mode for flash drives, USB memory sticks, etc. They’re made to have files transferred to them and then just yanked out and on to the next ‘host’. MTP mode has to ‘manage’ your media device; a whole lot more complicated.

I didn’t know that it’s dangerous to pull out the cord in MTP-mode, too.
And I definitely didn’t kow that it’s actually _more_ dangerous than the msc-mode.
(I was SO glad to have MTP-Mode, beacause 2 years ago I’ve had some usb-drives which died one after another - I yanked them out since ‘safely remove hardware’ wasn’t possible anymore. It just said ‘cannot safely remove…’ every time I tried it :-/ That happens to me a lot with usb-drives. The ones I just yanked out without safely remove… were simply dead after a while.)
So I have to decice: either stick with MTP and create playlists manually (sigh!) OR switch to MSC (still a bit scared! xD) and create playlists with Winamp, following the instructions you posted, Tapeworm.
Or - but that’s not really an option - get used to WMP
For the next few days I think I’ll stick with MTP-mode and give Media Monkey a second chance, trying out if it do what I want. If not, switching the usb-mode would be really a possible solution for me.
