I bought a 3 TB My Book. Unfortunately, I installed the WD utilities. That had the effect of making the drive useless, since it locks itself and prevents my backup software from writing to it. I reformatted the drive and uninstalled all the WD software that I could find, entered no password on the drive, and made a great attempt to treat the drive like a drive… just a drive. That fails. I need to know how to remove all and any WD security software permanently from the drive. If that is not possible I will have to return the drive, since this one is not reliably usable.

Formatting the drive will delete all data and all WD security settings on the drive.

You may also try removing the security from the settings menu on the WD Smartware software.
