WD 3TB MY BOOK Firmare Updater failed ''UNABLE'' to connect to the internet

When I try to update my firmware for my WD 3TB MY BOOK the Universal Firmware Updater gives the error unable to connect to the internet. What in the world is this?

I put off using my NEW WD 3TH My Book for a week trying to figure this out.

I must have spent 5 hours or more trying to figure out this problem, but to no avail. I closed every program and even went as far as uninstalling my firewall but still the SAME problem.

Can one of the moderators here just link the full installation?

Can one of the moderators give me some advice?

Can one of the moderators at least tell me what the last firmware update fixed?

I have no idea what this problem is about.

Vista/32bit/Usb 2.0/No WD My Book programs installed besides the SES drivers.

If the drive works normally don’t bother with the firmware update.  If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It can be a variety of things blocking the internet connection like a firewall, AV or other security siftware.

Hi Chris_Claremont, first of all just like Joe says, if everything is working fine there is no need to update the firmware. If you still decide to do the update, be sure to connect the My Book directly to one of the PC USB ports, avoid USB extension cables or USB hubs, also disable any antivirus that you have running. If the problem continues, try connecting the My Book to another PC if possible.

No offense.

But whenever a NEW firmware update comes out it’s for a reason and SOMETIMES it contains bug fixes and minor improvements, so the notion ‘‘IF IT AINT BROKE DON’T FIX IT’’ completely RIDICULOUS. You want to know what that really means? It means YOU DON’T KNOW and gave up… and have probably been handing out this same peice of advice to anyone with this problem.

I am going to try and call WD today, and if I actually get someone who knows what they are talking about and recieve a FIX I will come back and post the answer.

OH MY GOD.

I just tried to call WESTERN DIGITAL and they immediately made me listen to 3 minutes of bull saying i won a cruise to the bahamas. Not only that but when i tried to press another option the recording then said ----->

‘‘SORRY WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THE CRUISE’’

Can’t believe it.

I’m going to ask one more time, can someone upload the full package for the firmware update?

Do what you want about the firmware updates but keep in mind there is no way to go back. If the update gets botched you can have a bricked drive. There are plenty of posts about that if you care to search. That’s why I stand by if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. These generally aren’t security fixes and debatable whether you need them or not. After frying a video card with the latest driver update that was flawed I’ve been more careful what I update.

So anyways. I appreciate the suggestions, however I should not be having problems with this so this is still Western Digital’s fault. WD has an incredible amount of info pertaining to a number of issues a customer may encounter, and are very specific as to how to trouble shoot issues if they arise, more so than some other manufacturers, still though I am not the only one who has encountered this problem in fact it seems the ‘‘no internet connection detected’’ error goes back several years.

I finally got through to WD support and they were not much help either. They suggested a possibility this could be happening was because I already had the latest firmware installed, but to me that does not seem relative to the fact no internet was detected at all during my 50 times I tried to troubleshoot this problem on my own during the last week. Being that the WD My Book 3TB is actually a newly released product (September 2013), I suppose I am finally going to have to cave in and give up attempting to install the firmware update for December 2013. They suggested I might already have it because, the drives are being created with the latest firmware.

They offered no full installation package.*** (we don’t have anything besides what’s on the sight) <— Ya right.

The only other advice they seemed to be able to come up with is try another computer.*** <— A possibility

All that being said. Firmware does not really have to do with the actual reliability of the the hardware, so if you cannot seem to get the firmware Universal Updater to install on your NEW drive, I recommend you at least TEST your new drive

with Hard Disk sentinel to at least be able to see the READ/WRITE/SURFACE/RANDOM SEEK tests come back %100 before you start using your drive.

I also recommend you do not buy your products from Best Buy, Staples, or Walmart and instead go with Amazon or B&H Photo where you not only have 30 days to return the product if there is an issue but where BOTH carry EXTENDED warranties which by far surpass those offered by the manufacturer (in this case WD) like the Square Trade Warranty I bought. It covers, drops, spills, mechanical failures at NO extra cost for shipping whether receiving or shipping. In fact they actually send you the post paid label.

Update. I finally got the latest firmware installed by connecting it to another computer. I was unable to update it through… Vista… But was able to get the latest firmware installed on a Windows 7 OS system. If you choose to do this yourself, remove all your files, or back them up. I did not have a problem everything was quick (it did not take but 30 seconds to complete the update), but just MAKE SURE you follow the directions on the page verbatim ON THE FIRMWARE DOWNLOAD AND UPDATE PAGE or RISK losing your data and bricking your drive which would render it inoperable.
