New 8gb Fuze owner here and I’m having this exact problem with some non-VBR 128kbps MP3 files. Files play fine on computer (Winamp) and fine on the Fuze when screen is displayed, but stutter whenever the screen goes off. Puzzling…
fyi… brand new silver Fuze, Sansa Firmware Updater used to install 01.01.15, all files on internal memory as formated by the factory (i.e. did not reformat drive).
I don’t have this issue but that again I didn’t update my firmware… I have a 8 GB fuze also… Did it do it with the org. firmware? 01,01,11 I think was? if not you may want to drop back and run that ver. till the new firmware is out in Nov… George

Interesting twist – After making a “Custom” change to the EQ (bumped the first/left column up two clicks) this problem went away. Reset the EQ to neutral and problem returned. Reset again to the Custom EQ setting above and playback was clean.
Non VBR 128 kbps MP3 files. Stutters when backlight goes off. Changing from Normal EQ to something else (say; Rock) and the problem goes away. Change back to Normal and the stuttering starts again, when the backlight goes off.
Any alteration to the custom EQ seems to abate the problem. I’ve got the bass EQ up just one click (thankfully without any significant distortion in SQ) and haven’t had a recurrence of the problem. That said, I’d much prefer a flat/clean output not altered by the EQ, so I hope this problem can be firmware fixed soon…
I just got the 8g Fuze and have noticed the same issue. It became especially clear yesterday with a couple of tracks and it’s a relief to see I’m not alone in this. This is especially frustrating since I went with the Fuze in part because of what I’ve read regarding its great sound quality. Please fix this right away as it’s quickly turning me off of the player (which by any other account is wonderful)!

No problem playing same files ind Winamp.

I have a 8gb Fuze and ripped most of my CD’s with WMP-11 MP3 at 128 and I have not experienced this issue… What seems to be the variable factor here? I’m still running 01,01,11 version of firmware in my unit… George

Beats me. I have other non VBR 128 MP3 that I can play without problems.
The problem limited to a few of files so far, but I just got the player, so…
The only issues I had found or should I say Tapeworm found for me was a in between track kind a skip “I thought” but was really in the poor making of the cd, where tracks run together and the player tries to put a space in between… But my issue had nothing to do with the back light as far s I can tell… But same as you in it is limited to a few CD’s… George
I bought the 8GB Fuze for my nephew for XMAS and until now it has worked perfectly. While there are a few VBR songs, most aren’t. I’ve spent 2 days pouring over this forum and sent 2 emails to customer service, which haven’t replied, and all I’ve gathered is that this skipping/stuttering is a very common problem and that there doesn’t appear to be a solution. I’ve also noticed that many people have been given the run around, being told that the “fix” via new firmware will be coming out Nov 08. Seeing as I bought this in Dec 08 and it is now almost Feb 09, I’d say that was baloney! I’ve tried the scan check, removing then reloading songs, updating firmware, etc. I did try changing to “Rock” instead of “Normal,” which at first didn’t work until I turned the volume way down. Am I suppose to give this back to my nephew and tell him just don’t turn it up at all and you’ll be fine? He’s heartbroken and I’m pissed. I guess since there’s no customer service, I need to look into returning this and just get him an ipod. Their customer service is great and you don’t have to jiggle or toggle anything to get their product to work!
I have been running a 8GB unit from July 2008 and have skipped one firmware update. It had come with v01,01,11A and in January they had come out with their latest firmware upgrade v01,01,22a and most of the time I’m not one to jump into the latest and greatest when it comes to firmware upgrading!!I will let other users run with it for awhile but I downloaded this the day it came out and it had been running well no skipping or volume shuttering at all (it does have a sleep timer bug) No biggie… I only have MP3’s on my Fuze so that may be some thing you could do for a fix… At least your Nephew would have a great unit he could use with out issues… I have almost 900 mp3’s on my unit AND AND MY WIFE HAD A 4GB UNIT WITH A 8GB MICRO SD CARD IN IT AND SHE HAS AROUND 16,00 MP3’S on her’s ( Sorry for the caps) again all is fine… Something to try. Food for thought!! Ripp to MP3’s I hope this helps! George
I only rip to mp3’s. I hate those other formats, especially the m4a. I don’t know how I could get old firmware as this thing was bought in Dec for my nephew for XMAS. I did update the firmware yesterday while going thru all the suggestions to fix this problem, to no avail.
Couple a things to check out. 1st the headphones, Unplug them and then replug them in making sure they get all the way in, this may require a little more force than you think. It should seat into place (Click into place) 3 times. 2nd Genre, What Kind of music causes the clipping sound? Is it very loud? I for instance had an issue with my speed metal (Louder than normal in general). My solution for this was to use audacity to turn the volume of the mp3 down overall (I now have to turn up my pc speakers for proper headbanging volumes, but it helps with the sound on the fuze.
It’s not the headphones. My nephew already tried 3 different pairs before coming to me. I tried mine that I use with my ipod and even played with how far in I pushed the plug.
Every single song is messed up. Everything used to play just fine regardless of the volume but suddenly started this skipping stuff. The songs are just your basic pop/rock - nothing too heavy. Don’t tell me I have to turn down 3 Doors Down, Edwin McCain, or the BEP. Sheesh!

Just because you bought the unit after the firmware update was released doesn’t guarantee your player is up to date. In fact, it most likely isn’t. These things don’t leave the factory and hit the stores the very next day, you know. They are manufactured in lots, in China months before you ever see them on the store shelves. Plus, they all come out with the same version of firmware. It’s up to you (if you desire) to update it.
By the way, there was also another update released in December and there’s another planned for this quarter in 09. So SanDisk is very responsive when it comes to fixing bugs and implementing new features on this product. I’ve lost count, but I think it’s 3 updates now to the firmware and fourth forthcoming (play on words intentional).
Is Apple as on top of things and give this level of support? Not according to the i-pod forums.

You obviously missed where I previously responded that I just updated yesterday. My point is that people have been complaining about this same problem since last summer, to which the usual response was that the Nov update would fix the problem. Well considering that I bought mine in December and just updated yesterday, yet have the same issue that people have been reporting for months, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they haven’t fixed it. Additionally, after pouring over this board for 2 days, I’ve yet to find one “solved” thread regarding this issue.
Is Apple perfect? Nope, way too expensive. But they actually respond to me when I contact them for support and when your product craps out, they’ll replace it immediately. And I’ve never had to re-rip or convert my music to get an ipod to play mp3’s, nor jiggle the headphones.
So did you really take the time to respond to my problem just to chide me?
Like others have said push in the headphone jack more! You said you tried a few pair but that don’t mean you pushed it in far enough!! This is most likely the cause if all you songe sound like ■■■■!! other thing I can think of is if the unit was formatted accidentally if may have a unusable fat on it!! It needs Fat 32 to work right!! Use the format command on the unit and start over!! But really check out the headphone jack again first it does push in harder then the normal headphone jack!!! George
