Silver Clip display not as bright as Black Clip?

Just to add a little more angst to the process  you may not want to wait *too* long – I have a feeling that these 4GB Clips are being cleared out of the pipeline (hence the absurdly low prices, free shipping, etc.) – and, once gone, that’s all she wrote.

The day after my wife ordered this one (she asked if I wanted black or silver – I thought for a moment, and said “silver” even though I’d have preferred black, because I wanted to be able to easily tell which was which), I went to the website and saw that they were out of the silver ones, and, in the fine print under the description for the black one, there was something about how appearance INCLUDING COLOR may vary from description.  In other words it sounded like they were clearing 'em out, grab 'em while you can.  I don’t know if they have any left at this point (this was from Best Buy’s website).

I figure that with prices dropping, the economy hurting, and the fact that they can only make a finite quantity of these things – and for each “small”-size Clip they build, that’s one 8GB that *isn’t* built – they’d probably be prudent to focus on cutting down their number of SKUs, and sell the 8GB size (which is now going for less than a 4GB cost not too long ago). I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 16GB model too before too long, at which point the 8GB would be the “small” one.

It costs no less to build a 1, 2, or 4 GB Clip than an 8GB Clip (other than cost of the memory chip, which, once R&D is amortized, probably won’t cost much if any more at all to manufacture).  So, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to take resources that *could* go into the construction of 8GB Clips and use them to build the much less profitable smaller version.

Conjecture, but I think it passes “the reasonable man test”

I’m frankly surprised that they’re still selling the 1gb model with the advent of the 8gb. That one, I would not be at all surprised to see it go…but I think the 4gb will be around at least till the summer. I figure that if I really needed more than 4gb on hand , I could actually take the Fuze outside the house…lol…but if the price dropped next spring…who knows?

Life’s too short to get so worked up over a cool little device like this…relax people…it’ll be ok

OK now, let’s take that quote.  Put it in ALL CAPS.  And make it the first message (STICKY) that appears when you visit the forum.  (I call it the “take a deep breath first” test!)

Would solve A LOT of problems.  :smileyvery-happy:

FWIW, as of Saturday morning (12/6) buynow.com is selling silver 4GBs at Amazon for $39.99, free shipping.  Black unit is around $60 I think.

Just like on Black Friday…technically, I have the money…realistically, I know I shouldn’t spend it

The irony is I picked up two last week–reflexively–thinking (1) WOW, what a price-drop, and (2) if I don’t decide to decorate each room of my house with a different Clip, I can at least give them as gifts…

…and then I started to panic…“I am NOT giving them to some 10 or 12-year-old who will treat it like ■■■■!!!”  So now I feel like hoarding.  :stuck_out_tongue:

PS  However:  while some logical part of my brain now mocks the 1GB units (“HA!  I have 4GB!!!”) I know once I get my hand on an 8GB (sheesh, my entire library is only 5GB) I’ll look back at the 4GBs and feel the same lack of interest and total disdain I have for the 1GBs at the moment.  That part of my brain wonders why in the world I would own more than one 4GB.  Spare parts???

I figure when I get a 4 or 8 gb model, my existing 2gb could be my podcast-only unit…of course, I can rationalize just about anything…lol :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmmm…well:  the 4GB black unit just arrived (no idea where the silver unit is!..they were both ordered last Thursday).  I have to say it’s mighty…nice-looking, and I’m tempted to open it (and try the brightness, of course).  Once I do that I’ll have to keep it.

I think what I’ll do is get a silicone skin for it, and then offer it to my wife (she has a lowly 1GB Creative Zen Nano Plus).  The advantage of the Zen, despite it’s lower capacity, is that she only uses it once every week or so.  Whenever the battery dies, we just pop in a rechargable AAA.  Too bad we don’t have the same option with the Clip.

BTW, the Zen also came with a carrying case (more of a skin) and clip.  In many ways it compares nicely to the Sansa Clip.

I bought two 4 GB units from Best Buy on black friday, $35 each.  I got one black and one silver, so I can tell them apart.  The silver one looks quite cool in the right light, but otherwise from the front looks very much like the black one.  I knew that the silver would have a dimmer display, but figured that it would be tolerable.

It is noticeably dimmer.  It doesn’t make it unusable, but it is harder to read if there is any light shining directly on the screen.  Bright sunshine is too much for either display.   Sometimes, the dimmer screen makes me want to trade the silver in.  I can’t always read it from an angle a couple feet away, while the black display is easy to read.  This is with the black at default brightness, about 50%, and the silver maxxed.

But it isn’t unreadable in most light, the shiny appearance is cool, and it is nice to be able to tell them apart at a glance.   If there were more color options, I’d skip the silver, despite its cool shinyness.

Does the 4gb clip come in black?

 look up one post ^^.
