Sansa Clip 01.01.29 Latest Firmware Download

Hey, I finally figured it out! The content I was loading was a podcast, and it shows in the podcast menu not the music menu.

Thanks for replies!

“(And FLAC would be a third, but considering the “low” capacity of these Clips, that may be overkill)”

what do you mean by low capacity of these clips? ive seen an nintendo ds emulate neogeo games like metal slug perfectly so by low capacity, you must know what you are talking about for sure, nothing is impossible.

Miikerman, no it’s not. It was just adopted by Apple, but it’s NOT their format.

Sony, Creative and Samsung offer AAC support, plus there is more than one AAC encode.

Are there any plans to implement support for id3 v2.4 tags?

FYI, I’m having issues with charging with the .29 firmware.  It won’t charge using many different types of charging:  USB to powered hub, USB to USB adapter, and USB to laptop USB port, each time using different USB-miniUSB cables.

When I downgrade to .20, charging function works as it should.

EDIT:  FYI I fixed it-- by downgrading to .20 and then back up to .29.  It’s charging again.

I am happy that it doesn’t go out. That way I can tell when it’s complete. How would you tell if the display is blank? I don’t know what the issue is since the battery is being charged. I can’t be the display since the correction was for the so called ‘solution’ for the 4 GB version, in which the display is over-driven to increase the brightness due to poor design of the ‘coating’ which dimmed the display in the first place.

Speaking of which, I hope they fix this stupid manufacturing/design problem soon so that I can get a larger size device. Perhaps with the 8 GB version?!

Is it my imagination, but:

I had thought that with the firmware upgrade, the battery charging screen was being modified so that it would not be on constantly while computer USB charging is taking place.  The situation seems the same for me as before.  Have matters changed and I just haven’t noticed, or did this feature upgrade not make it into the released upgrade?

edit:

Answer seems to be, the screen goes to black at about an hour.  (!)  Wouldn’t a shorter period, like 5 minutes, make more sense?  Or use the user-configurable power-off selection amount?

After getting used to the new firmware’s Podcast and Audiobook features for a while, I am beginning to like them a lot.  Especially this one:

  • Auto Bookmark: will prompt the user with “Resume?” or “Restart” option when restarted.

Which is great, and accidental short left (or right) click does not jump to the beginning of (or to the beginning of next) track, which is also a good improvement.

Having thanked for these two features, let me be greedy

How about making a short left (or right) click to jump 5 minutes back (or forward)?

I’ve not seen this after updating the FW.  I usually pause, then turn off the clip when listening to podcasts.  They are in the podcast folder, but when I turn the clip back on, it starts where I left off, but it doesn’t offer to “Resume or Restart”.

Am I doing something wrong?

It works fine the way it is, I usually want to pick up where I left off, but there are times when I’s like to be able to bookmark a certain podcast listen to a different one and come back to the same point in the original podcast.  Is it possible to do this?

Yes.  If your podcasts are stored in the podcast folder, you can exit out of one podcast (using the menu button) and go listen to a different podcast.  When you come back to listen to the first podcast, it will give you the “resume or restart” option.

This firmware release is awesome - great work!

I have three interface ideas I’d like to see in a future release - at least one has been mentioned in a separate thread:

  1. time remaining display.  Perhaps some under-utilised buttons could be used to switch between elapsed/remaining.  For example holding the play/pause button could cycle between the two?

  2. fast-scroll of track information.  Perhaps holding the home button could scroll the track information 2-3 times faster (or as fast as is possible without it bluring). This would apply in every screen where information scrolls.

  3. screen blanking when connected via USB.  I presently leave my USB plug half inserted so it only charges and doesn’t connect.

It’s obvious from the middle button VU/GoList choice depending if you press or hold the button that the firmware is capable of doing this.

Also case insensitive header tag comprehension which is mentioned many places already so I don’t have to use my dodgy script (http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=clip&thread.id=6827&view=by\_date\_ascending&page=2)

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the reply.  I finally did see this after exiting one podcast, listening to another and coming back to the first one.  I usually either listen to a podcast to the end or pause and reume then delete.

Thanks for the conformation, I really like this feature now that I know how it works.

Hey - very cool trick!! thanks for mentioning that …

Awesome update!  Thank you so much Sandisk!

I’ve been really hoping for the large playlist and shuffle fixes.  I’ve got a 650 song playlist that used to take about a minute to load and then another minute to start playback.  Now it’s about 10 seconds to load and another 10 to start playback.  So much better!  Also, the shuffle is much improved.  Especially like being able to skip back to previous tracks.

Only problem I’ve noticed with update so far, all FM presets lost. Completely minor detail, just reset em’.

I still can discern no improvement in the shuffle feature. Like the clip, alot, but would be nice to have a shuffle that actually works. whine xxxxx moan…

I recently purchased the 1gb clip and I’m having a problem with the volume settings after updating with the latest firmware.

I noticed the volume levels have gone down. Before the update, having the volume set at about 55% (give or take) was enough to listen at a comfortable level. After the update, I have to turn it up to about 75% to get the same effect.

To answer the inevitable question: No, it has nothing to do with the volume settings (normal/high). I never touched the settings before and after the firmware update.

So… does/did anyone have the same problem? Any solutions?

Theres no changes in the firmware to affect this,  you can confirm by going to the previous version and trying to compare.

The shuffle works the way it should now.  Try switching shuffle off and on again.

Any sound quality regressions in the latest firmware? After all the talk online of how the clip sounds great, I’m somewhat underwhelmed. As compared to the 2nd Gen shuffle (and with

the same headphones) while clarity may be slightly better, the bass is boomy.

Edit: I should say that this might just be the effect of the clip being able to drive the headphones properly, while previously there was a bass dip. Nevertheless, it will be insteresting to hear from anyone. The particular headphones I’m using are the UE 11 pros.

I too have noticed a perceptible dip in volume since the update.

I’d never consider the Clip “boomy” (And I use somewhat bass-heavey phones- JVC Aircushions)- but maybe it depends what kind of music one listens to. (I listen to everything from classical to '40’s standards to classic rock and 70’s/80’s pop)- the newer music (90’s/00’s) tends to be very bass-heavey, and I would imagine the Clip is just accurately reflecting that. Quite frankly, even with the EQ fully tweaked, I often find myself wishing for a little more bass.

Think I’ll wait on trying the new FW- I’d love the fixed shuffle feature…but I’m hearing of too many other bugs…this is getting annoying!

Oh, Clipman, don´t let the complains stop you of enjoying the new FW, I have two clips, updated both and they’re working nicely, no fast discharge, no low volume, no bad EQ, etc. Have you noticed those problems dissapearing later? Is there an antiplacebo effect? Or just the fear of failure? OK, I have the invisible ogg tags problem, but is not that big deal (they’re working on that already and you have options) and the oggs still sound incredible to me. The benefits are far more concrete than the problems: the more intelligent shuffle, the podcast/audiobook features, the exact power value, the ogg playing and some more. And you can go back if you want, but I doubt it.

By the way, Sansa, GAPLESS playing is your easiest and best bet to increase market share, believe me. And another secret feature: NON-DESTRUCTIVE ReplayGain playing… people will love you, specially me…:manvery-happy:

Message Edited by cristiano007 on 06-04-2008 12:18 PM

you mean the clip doesn’t suport replaygain at the moment?

Anyhow, it seems that it has “burned in” a little or something, it’s less bassy now - definitely starting to sound better. :D

Not the non-destructive kind of ReplayGain, which mean that the player read the volume adjustment from the tags and make the necessary changes to the output without even touching the audio part of the file. I think that what some people are doing here is to amplify the audio signal from the file with another software and then record the modified file in the player.
