Surprisingly, the problem turned out to be TOO MANY songs (more than 8ooo).
The songs from streaming radio and youtube loaded and played fine.
Change to rockbox took care of the problem. Now I can use the full 32GB memory.

REFRESHING YOUR MEDIA
How To Cure “Refreshing Your Media”.|
The first thing to do regarding routine charging of the device is to use a Clip ZIP compatible wall charger…any micro USB charger will do (5V)…I use a Nokia one. If you charge the device by connecting to your PC it will automatically go into “Refreshing Your Media” mode when you disconnect it even if you haven’t altered the content. If this fails you will have to format both memories - internal and external while the card is inserted in your device and reload all data. I double format using first the PC while connected and then “Format” function found under “Settings” and then “System Settings” then reconnect to PC to reload music. You may get away with formatting just the external card - if this fails formatting both will be necessary. Don’t worry about the possibility of erasing the software…it is erase protected. You may need to repeat every year or so when it crashes . Don’t remove the card from the device even when turned off you may need to repeat the whole process.
