Firmware Wishlist

Been so long I had (gladly) forgotten.  To be more specific, the old E200’s would update every time they were turned on if a microSD card was in the slot.  Otherwise, yes, they would only update if the files had been changed.  I had just wondered if the Clip+ did this as well.  The other poster made it sound like it did.

PS:  Thank you, Tapeworm.  I saw your reply right after I first posted this one.

The ability for the user to choose whether to sort (primarily) the music and podcasts by artist or album.

Also the ability to jump forwards/backwards by a small interval, e.g. 10 or 15 seconds, with a single push to the forwards/backwards buttons, rather than the current behavior of jumping to the next item in the list – this should be a user option to choose which behavior is preferred.

Furthermore, I would like the device _not_ to power-up (turn on) when _disconnected_ from a charger (i.e. if the device was already powered off while connected to a charger, it currently automatically turns on when disconnected). It’s far too easy to be unaware that a device like this is powered up (LED display which, once blanked, is indistinguishable from a powered-off device).

In general there should be far more user-options.

Most of all, I would like the firmware to be opened up so that I could make the mods myself, rather than asking SanDisk to do so. SanDisk is a hardware company: there’s no need to consider the firmware proprietary, it would be by far the best in the world if the community could make improvements, helping them to sell more devices.

Some items on my wishlist:

  1. Fix the bug(s) that makes files/folder sometimes not appear or appear out of order in the folders view.  This is critical.

  2. The “resume” feature under audiobooks in the folder view feature doesn’t always work and this bug should be fixed.

  3. I have an 8 GB Clip+ wiht a 16 GB microSD ship.  I’ll plug it in to my computer ONLY to charge up the battery (without adding or deleting any files/folders)  and then when I disconnect it the Clip+ takes quite a bit of time to rebuild the database. During this time, I cannot use the player.  I would hope that the firmware can be fixed so that the database will be rebuilt only if files/folders are changed.

  4. I really hate the way the fast forward/backward buttons work. You go forward/backwards with an exponentially increasing rate of speed such that it is very difficult to go right to the point where you want to without devoting all your attention to this and carefully watching the time indicator on the screen. Even then it is difficult. You either don’t go far enough back or you end up way too far.  When listening to music these functions are’t usually very important, but I thind them critical for listening to audio books.

As time goes by using the Clip+, I would really appreciate scrolling album title!

As everyone knows, playing music while charging the Sansa’s accu from the computer is not possible. But it could easily be done, as the playing while charging by a non-computer-power-source clearly shows. So my wish is:

  • Could you please add another USB-Mode in the system settings, which simply allows charging the accu from the computer without establishing a data connectivity? Simply listening to the music while charging the accu from the computer.

Nice player, btw. :-)

  1. Ask before updating database and option to disable them. I was pretty furious this morning when I turned on my player before getting on the bus, intending to actually listen to some music, and was instead forced to sit in silence for the entire ride as the database needlessly updated. If you’re going to force the update at least do it when the device is removed from the USB, not when it’s turned on.

  2. I don’t merely want “Folder View.” I want an option to completely turn off ID3 tag mode so that when I go to “Music” I go straight to my files. It would also be nice if there were no separation between the Memory card and the internal memory on this.

  3. Sound playback during FF and REW. Pretty essential for audiobook listeners and DJs/electronic music listeners. I’m both.

“Folder navigation” still uses the database on Sansa players. It just stores the file/folder structure in the database and late you navigate using those. It has nothing to do with actual folder/file browsing on the filesystem.

I’ve had other players that give you the option between ID3 tag mode and sane (folder) mode. If you were in folder mode the database didn’t need to update. Other cheapo players that don’t bother with ID3 tags don’t need to do database updates to play files.  On every player I’ve seen it seems the only need for a database is to store and sort the ID3 info. If you’re viewing the files directly there’s no need, even if the player displays ID3 info on the playback screen.

In most cases you can play music on the computer itself while charging, right?

“As everyone knows, playing music while charging the Sansa’s accu from the computer is not possible.”

You can if you use a power only cable. I have some of these that came with external battery packs I bought.

Wishlist:

-charge-only mode , so the Clip+ will use the cable it came with but not “connect” to the PC, it will simply charge from any USB port.  I know you can buy another cable, but why should I have to, when a software feature will do this?  This would also permit the device to play music while plugged in to the PC, which I can’t believe it doesn’t do out of the box (without an extra cable).  Just add it to the list with MTP, MSC, call it “CO” for charge only.  This mode would simply disable the 2 data pins on the usb interface of the device itself.

-charging display should actually show the charge , while connected to a PC, right now, the device does not actually show the current charge of the Clip+.  It just cycles through a static animation that does not provide any useful information.  How about showing the actual charge value, either as an icon or a percentage?

-time/date sync on connect.  Several devices already pull the PC time/date when they’re plugged in, the Clip+ should also do this automatically, as an OPTION.

-fix the voice recorder list bug.  The bug is:  If you record several voice sessions with the voice recorder feature, and delete them off the device in MSC mode, those voice sessions will continue to show up in the list of recordings.  They cannot be deleted, cannot be played back (obviously) and never disappear unless you format the device.  Obviously a bad situation if you want to try and actually keep music on the device at the same time as having voice recordings on there.

-record voice direct to .MP3 instead of .WAV, as an OPTION.  While it’s true I can convert the .WAV’s pretty easily after the fact, it would be really nice if the device could do this as it’s recording.  It would also consume vastly less storage on the device (which is 166 megabytes/hour at the moment).

-Voice recording quality options.  It would be nice to see different sample rates and/or bit rates in the voice recorder options to either have higher quality recordings that required more space, or lower quality recordings that would be able to record for a longer period of time.

Here are very important things for me

Ability to turn off ID3 tag navigation
I, like many other people, never use ID3 tag navigation, only folder navigation.
I wish there was an option in Setting to turn it off (enable/disable).

Full screen clock with date

There is a Clock setting, but there is no way to see the Clock

Simplify music navigation by ID3 tags

Such options as “My Top Rated”, “Recently Added”, “Song Rating”, etc… on my opinion are not very useful, could be easily removed.

What useful is probably only Artist/Album/Title navigation.

Audiobooks navigation missing Author (Artist)

When I select Audiobooks from Music navigation menu, I can only see the Album (no Author/Artis info).

I understand the reason for having Album (audiobooks that are split into pieces with the same Album name are treated as one book).

But what if I have many short books (stories) from different authors with no Album information?

Need to be able to navigate by Author/Album/Title, same as with music.

You all do realize that, given the likelihood of the Clip+ EEPROM having little to no left-over space (you don’t put 256k in a device with a 128k production footprint) any new features would probably have to come at the expense of existing ones?

Tweaking code for bug fixes would be a different story.

slishnevsky I have little to no interest in any of those “improvements” so please don’t assume everyone wants to lose standard features for them.

“slishnevsky I have little to no interest in any of those “improvements” so please don’t assume everyone wants to lose standard features for them.”

  1. It is possible that you have little to no interest. And that’s fine.
  2. I don’t asume anything. This is my wishlist.
  3. What standard features don’t you want to loose by implementing features I asked for?
  4. These improvements are very important to me. And… this is a wishlist, I expressed my wish.

add the feature to remove “._” files when updating the database. These files are created when connecting it to a Mac. Yes, I know that there are tools to remove them but the old clip’s firmware was able to remove these files automatically. So I don’t see any reason why the newer one shouldn’t be able to do the same.

There’s too many posts in this thread, so if I repeat someone else’s feature request, please excuse me.

I with that the middle button on the player could do more than just toggle between the track progress indicator and that visualization thing (which is quite useless imho). Pressing the middle button multiple times during playback could loop through a few useful screens, such as progress bar, total track length, rating, clock etc.

What do you think of that?

Thanks,

Eugene.

Capturing play count & date of play.   I’m a podcast guy and miss this feature after switching from my iPod.    Is this something that could get done via a firmware update?

I would suggest:

  1. Improve estimation of battery charge level.
  2. FM Radio: allow lower volume levels (I perceive no change below about 45% until I get down to zero)

I’ve noticed this too

Me too, as have many others. I’m adding my (redundant) request for fixing #2 to “turn up the volume” on this issue so hopefully the Sandisk f/w engineers will understand this is a must-fix problem.

This is something they never implemented on the original clip or fuze.  I got used to it eventually (actually now I prefer it because I got a bit OCD over my top 100), but I did miss it.  I wouldn’t hold your breath for them to add this to the clip+.

My wishes:

  1. When playing by Folders would be a convenient automatic transition to the next folder after playing the last song.
  2. In the menu item Music paragraph “Folders” hidden from the eyes(at the end of list), although this method of navigation is much more convenient than, for example, by genre.
3)It was nice to see support for CUE files for albums recorded in the form image.flac+CUE.
