Firmware update R201 released for SanDisk Extreme SSD

I’m starting to think that SanDisk can’t fix this problem because of something they did in the design of their Extreme SSDs. What other explanation could there be for their continuing silence in the face of a product defect that’s damaging their brand name reputation? If so, I think it’s time to fess up and offer a compensation program for customers who got burned.

If it could not be fixed tweektown would not have gotten a drive with working TRIM from sandisk. Just be patient a firmware is coming. TRIM is not completely broken anyway it is just not as efficient as it could be. There is a very detailed article Bad_machine wrote in regards to TRIM. I suggest you take a look at it.

Hi

Im having same issue ,did you sortit  out ? If so what have you done .

Did you read the post directly above yours (posted yesterday)?

Chris Ramseyer replied to a TweakTown reader about SanDisk’s forthcoming SSD firmware. It was shared to the forums by the reader’s relative. Awesome sauce.

First off, Chris is really thoughtful and took the time to hash out a detailed reply. Secondly, he was more specific than the article about the issue with the 5.03 firmware. 5.04 fixes a problem in 5.03’s WHQL Certification. That certification is important to an SSD manufacturer’s OEM partners. Lastly, he’s following up with his SanDisk contacts about releasing the firmware before SandForce lands with 5.05, so hopefully we’ll see something in the form of a beta release soon.

Hi,

I downloaded this tool, but when I run it, it can’t recognize my SSDs. I’ve got them on RAID 0.

Using Windows 8 Enterprise edition.

I may be wrong but I’d be pretty surprised if you could upgrade the firmware while the drives are in a RAID array…

Also as Windows 8 isn’t officially released yet, it’s quite probably the tool doesn’t support it.

the tool does not work in RAID config nor will firmware update. you will need to create a backup image deconfigure the RAID update the drives then recreate your RAID and reinstall your image.

Alternatively, download the ISO for your drives, then change the system back to AHCI.

Boot the CD and update your drives.

Then change back to RAID mode.

I still recommend an image backup, but you shouldn’t have to restore from it.

Yes, this method works, I’ve done it myself. You will likely need to go into your BIOS twice, once to change back to RAID mode, and on the first restart after that, go into the BIOS to check and fix the boot order, which may be wrong, mine was.

Hi Sandisk Guru,

I download and install this toolkit and use both USB drive and DVD ROM Drive drive to upgrade the firmware. But it hangs if I use the USB drive and give some error or missing data using DVD ROM Drive. I also tried changing the HDD configuration in the bios but failed. I have 120GB Extreme installed on my Dell Inspiron 7520R SE laptop. Everything works fine except this firmware upgrade. Is there any other option on how to update the firmware?

Thanks.

I’m assuming you’ve long since figured this out, but I’ll post the solution for others who are struggling with this.

Assuming you have removed the Optical drive from your macbook (using something like the optibay) and are trying to run the update via an external CD drive enclosure, it simply will not work. The update is linux based and will not recognize externals. You will need to either remove your SSD and put it into a computer that has an optical drive hard lined into the computer, or you will need to remove your optibay and reinstall your superdrive (just for the update). It’s a huge pain in the ass, I know… but the update will work fine afterwards. After you’re done the update you can remove your superdrive again.

Hope this helps!

I have a mid-2009  MBP with the Extreme in the optical bay drive and I was able to apply the updated using an external FW attached optical drive with no issues. I had to hold the ‘C’ down as it booted, but the linux loader came up, booted, found the SSD and updated it.
